A mile-long school bus procession stopped at Senator Ted Cruz’s house in Houston on Thursday– 4,368 empty seats symbolizing the thousands of children killed by gun violence in the last two years, while memorializing two teens who lost their lives here in our very own Santa Clarita Valley.
A gun control and anti-gun violence advocacy organization organized a mile-long convoy of 52 bright yellow school buses filled with the belongings of children killed in school shootings this year – a school bus procession carrying accessories from Santa Clarita’s very own Gracie Muehlberger and Dominic Blackwell.
Change the Ref, an organization raising awareness about mass shootings through “strategic interventions,” has rolled out the peaceful mobile fleet headed to Cruz’s office, but are first making a pit-stop at the Texas senator’s home.
There, organizers plan to hand the senator himself a little gift: a letter written five years ago by Joaquin Oliver, a 12-year-old boy killed during the Parkland shooting in 2018.
In the letter, Oliver asks for background checks on gun sales.
A Bigger Purpose
Change the Ref, founded by Oliver’s father following the death of his young son, is asking the senator to renounce “future political funding from the National Rifle Association (NRA)” and enact legislation for universal background checks, according to the organization’s website.
The school bus procession idea sparked around the time protestors surrounded the NRA convention in May – which occurred days after a gunman shot and killed 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde just 300 miles away.
Even with extensive protests and the recent mass elementary school shooting, senators and House members in Texas continue to receive contributions from gun rights interests, amounting to over $14 million over the years, according to Change the Ref.
“To every politician who has stood by, taken NRA money and refused to listen to the people they represent: the museum is on the way to honor you next,” read a statement from Change the Ref. “We will not stop with Ted Cruz.”
Santa Clarita Ties
The “NRA Children’s Museum” is carrying items from school shooting victims “including a pair of worn-out checkered Vans from 15-year-old Gracie Muehlberger, killed at her Santa Clarita high school in 2019; a kindergarten graduation card with a smiling teddy bear on it, awarded to Sandy Hook victim Chase Kowalski; and a LeBron James Miami Heat jersey adored by Oliver, who died in the Parkland school shooting in 2018,” according to Change the Ref.
Dominic Blackwell is also being featured in the movement, and his worn Spongebob backpack has made its way through Houston on the school bus procession.
Gracie and Dominic were shot and killed during a six-second killing spree at the hands of a 16-year-old student at Saugus High School, which left three others wounded and traumatized.
On the morning of Nov. 14, 2019, the 16-year-old shooter walked into the quad of Saugus High School before pulling a .45-caliber semi-automatic ghost handgun from his backpack, and opening fire, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).
In less than ten seconds, the suspect – who turned 16 the day of the shooting – turned the gun on himself. He was later hospitalized, and died in the hospital with his mother by his side.
Even almost three years later, the impact of the 2019 Saugus High School shooting has left an undeniable mark not only on the families of those who were directly affected, but on the community-at-large.

Killing children or adults is unacceptable and nauseating but the emphasis on gun control is wrong. If we are going to have a mile-long line of buses at taxpayers’ expenses to advocate for gun control, then let’s have a one-thousand-mile-long caravan at the expense of the legal system to complain about the out-of-control crime. One of the most horrific massacres in history was done with non-lethal commercial planes proving that we need to control criminals not guns. A 10 and 14-year-old in Philadelphia killed a 73-year-old-man about three days ago and done without a gun or knife. These Hollywood style marches do nothing to honor the victims and only serve as the stage for the gun control opera.

As for guns, Libertarians feel all people have the right to defend themselves with firearms. Just doesn’t make any sense to me why that should include assault rifles and ghost guns. Especially since assault rifles play the biggest role in mass shootings.
