PSA Featuring Saugus High School Shooting Survivor Wins Emmy Award

Sandy Hook Promise’s “Teenage Dream” won Emmy Awards’ Outstanding Commercial honor for 2022, featuring appearances from teenage survivors of school shootings, including a survivor of the 2019 Saugus High School Shooting.

On Sunday, Sandy Hook Promise’s “Teenage Dream” PSA was selected as the winner of the Outstanding Commercial Award, as celebrated in an announcement by Saugus High School Shooting survivor Mia Tretta, who was featured in the moving video.

“We won the Emmy! I’m so happy I was a part of such an amazing group with @sandyhook & so many inspiring and badass gun violence survivors,” Tretta said in a Sunday morning tweet. “Thank you @NicoleHockley for making this happen & being one of my heroes. So proud of everyone!”

11 school shooting survivors, including Tretta, re-record the upbeat tribute to teenage innocence – Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” – then reveal to the viewer how their own innocence was stolen from them by a school shooting.

“The powerful PSA illustrates how the teenage dream is stolen from those impacted by school shootings. School shootings should not be part of growing up in America. Prevention is critical,” reads a statement from Sandy Hook Promise.

In 2019, a 16-year-old student at Saugus High School shot and killed two other students, and injured three others, including Tretta, before turning the gun on himself.

In the aftermath of the shooting, which killed Tretta’s best friend, 14-year-old Dominic Blackwell, as well as 15-year-old Gracie Ann Muehlberger, Tretta dedicated herself to learning more about the weapon and policies that had contributed to ending the life of her best friend, and had nearly killed her as well.

“I’m a lot better than I was on November 14th of 2019, btu I’m still not the same as I was before, and I don’t think I’ll ever be,” Tretta said. “It’s just getting to the point where the hard days aren’t that hard.
