Santa Clarita residents have lost power Thursday morning for public safety power shutoffs (PSPS) due to high winds and fire risk in the area.
As of 11:30 a.m. Thursday, a PSPS is in place near Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway in Canyon Country, according to Southern California Edison (SCE).
In addition, many areas of Acton and Agua Dulce are also out of power due to the PSPS, according to SoCal Edison.
The power restoration for a majority of the area is estimated to be 3 p.m. on Thursday, depending on weather conditions, according to SCE.
Other areas in Canyon Country, Castaic, Acton and Agua Dulce are under PSPS consideration as of Thursday morning.
SoCal Edison has set up a community crew vehicle at 17200 Sierra Highway to give residents customer resiliency kits, which include PSPS information, light snacks, water, small resiliency devices. and personal protection equipment.
“During these events, we will proactively turn off power in high fire risk areas to reduce the threat of wildfires,” said SoCal Edison officials in a statement. “Turning off our customers’ power is not something we take lightly, but PSPS events are one of the ways we can better ensure the safety of the public, our customers and our employees.”

The implementations of the outages are a result of strong winds and low humidity within the Santa Clarita Valley, with wind gusts as high as 60 mph.
“This is a particularly dangerous situation due to an unusual duration of extremely dry vegetation, strong winds, and very dry air leading to very critical fire weather conditions,” the warning reads.” Any new fire ignition in these areas will likely have very dangerous fire spread that could potentially threaten life and property.”
A High Wind Watch has also been issued for the Santa Clarita Valley, lasting throughout Thursday and ending Friday afternoon.
