SoCal Edison To Reduce Red Flag Power Outages In Canyon Country

In an attempt to reduce red flag warning power outages in Canyon Country, Southern California Edison has begun electrical grid work on the Marcus circuit located in the area.

The project’s goal is to increase the system’s resilience during high fire weather conditions and includes replacing 2.3 miles of existing overhead wire with covered conductors.

SoCal Edison officials estimate this will result in a 100 percent reduction in outages, based on weather conditions in 2020 and 2021, according to an announcement from the City of Santa Clarita.

According to SoCal Edison (SCE), all customers on this circuit have been mailed information from SCE directly.

The project is part of SCE’s Wildfire Mitigation plan that includes hardening the grid in fire areas to reduce the need for Public Safety Power Shut Offs (PSPS).

More than 50 other circuits are expected to undergo the same hardening process. Due to extreme wind last November, SCE is also making enhancements to 11 of the circuits already hardened last year.

During construction, residents might see road closures, traffic lane reductions and sidewalk closures, as well as temporary power shut offs. SCE has said it will notify residential customers at least 48 hours in advance of a power shut-off.
