Chemical Reaction Involving Charcoal Cause Of Stevenson Ranch Apartment Fire

Investigators with the Los Angeles County Fire Department have determined that the cause of a three-story apartment fire in Stevenson Ranch last week that resulted in $180,000 worth of damage, was accidental.

On Thursday Oct. 14, around 3:15 p.m., firefighters responded to the 25300 block of The Old Road in Stevenson Ranch for an apartment structure fire with heavy smoke showing, according to investigators with the Department.

An unopened bag of charcoal was left on the third floor balcony and was exposed to weather and watering of plants, according to the investigation.

“Due to water on the charcoal, investigators determined that a chemical reaction occurred, thus starting a fire on the third floor balcony,” the investigation reads, which was determined to be an accident.

Seven individuals were misplaced by the fire and have received help from the American Red Cross, according to the investigation.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
