The rural communities north of the Santa Clarita Valley, including Lake Hughes and Green Valley, were struck by a deluge of rain on Sunday night that brought flash floods and mudslides, trapping drivers and emergency responders alike.

Due to the storm last night we have had to enact road closures. Elizabeth Lake Road just west of Johnson Rd in Lake Hughes will be closed for the remainder of the day.

A fast-moving flood of water and mud trapped nearly a dozen vehicles, as well as a team of responding firefighters near Pine Canyon Road and Lake Hughes Road in Lake Hughes, according to California Highway Patrol incident logs. Firefighters at the scene were reportedly working to get trapped drivers out of their vehicles and to higher ground, according to Los Angeles County Fire radio transmissions.

“There are 14 vehicles involved, 10 of which involved a rescue, but no patients,” said Maria Grycan, Public Services Liason for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “There’s two to three feet of water.”

Lake Hughes Road has been closed between mile marker 5 and mile marker 7 due to the incident, according to CHP. Additional closures may be incoming.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a flash flood warning for the affected area on Sunday evening.
