When a homeowner discovered bed bugs in their master bedroom, they were worried about using chemicals to eliminate them, but Unipest had another idea.

“They were asking me if I had any kind of eco-friendly or organic options that wouldn’t require the use of any sprays to get rid of their bed bugs,” said Owner Cardon Ellis. “Guess what? Unipest — the most eco-friendly company — does indeed have these options.”

The homeowners chose to do a heat treatment, which has become increasingly more popular over the last few decades because it’s highly effective, requires no chemicals and can be completed in as little as four hours, according to Ellis.

“To pull off an effective heat treatment, you need three things,” Ellis explained. “First, you need a really good team… Second, you need really good equipment, so I use only the best Green Tech Heat Solutions equipment. And third, you need to perform a really thorough inspection to know exactly what parts of the home indeed need that heat treatment.”

When it comes to prepping the affected rooms, Ellis noted that wall plugs and socket covers should be removed in case any bed bugs are hiding inside, and furniture should be moved to the center of the room so fans can be placed.

Then what Ellis called the “big guns” are brought in: a 50,000 BTU heater by Green Tech Heat that uses 10-20 gallons of propane in a single job at a house.

“Basically you need to have the room at 120 degrees for four hours, 130 degrees for three hours or 140 degrees for two hours before you can call the job complete,” he said. “Only once the coolest spot in the room is above 120 degrees can we start counting down the time until we can turn the heaters off.”

Another benefit of heat treatments is that they’re what’s called ovicidal, meaning that they’ve been proven to kill eggs as well as bed bugs, unlike pesticides, Ellis added.

“At the end of the day, if you can keep that room between 120 and 140 some odd degrees,” he said, “you’re going to end up killing all of the bed bugs inside that entire space without ever having sprayed a drop of chemical inside.”
