The Santa Clarita pest control company Unipest now offers a new kind of mosquito control service that doesn’t involve spraying chemicals around a home.

A specific type of fungus is placed in the bucket’s water that will attract mosquitoes with its smell, according to Ellis. 

“They go in there, they get it on them and then not only does it kill them over the next week, but it contaminates the water source in which they’re going to lay their eggs that they touch, killing all of their eggs as well,” Ellis explained. 

Ellis noted that the fungus is “almost non-toxic” and is safe to have exposed in a yard, adding that it does not contaminate drinking water.

Controlling the recent spike in mosquito activity around homes in Santa Clarita can be important in the prevention of certain diseases that mosquitoes commonly carry, according to Ellis. 

“People worry about West Nile, people worry about Zika, and these are all legitimate worries,” Ellis said. “We’ve had one case of Zika here now in California, but we don’t know if it was due to travel or if it was gotten here.”
