Governor to call special session to resolve budget shortfall.
Assemblyman Cameron Smyth will be heading back to Sacramento
after the election for a special legislative session to address the budget. The
state is facing a $3 billion shortfall if adjustments are not made quickly.

“On November 5th, the governor will call the
legislature into a special session,” Smyth explained. “It doesn’t mean we will
come back on the 5th, just that he’s calling the special session
where the governor and legislative leaders will get together to start
discussing what we can do to deal with the budget.
“At some point a couple weeks later, we will be called back as
a full legislature to reconvene and debate and discuss a budget reform package
that has been negotiated.”
Smyth
said that the special session will only require 41 members of the legislature
for a quorum.
“We
don’t have specific dates, but the governor has told us he wants to deal with
this before the new members are sworn in and that’s December first. I’m
thinking some time between November 5 and Thanksgiving is when we’d be called
back.”
The current budget was signed at the end of September after an 85-day
impasse, the longest in California
history.
