The person killed in Stevenson Ranch earlier this month has been identified as a Castaic man.

Around 12:40 a.m. Friday, April 12, emergency responders were informed of a traffic collision with an overturned vehicle and a person in the roadway near the intersection of The Old Road and Constitution Avenue in Stevenson Ranch, according to California Highway Patrol reports.

Mario Alberto Contreras Hernandez, 39, of Castaic, was removed from the vehicle, transported to a local hospital, and later pronounced dead. The passenger of the vehicle was also transported to the hospital with moderate injuries.

Preliminary investigation by CHP revealed that Hernandez had been driving northbound on The Old Road with a 23-year-old passenger in a 1999 Subaru Outback at the time of the crash.

“Due to an unknown reason, the driver made an unsafe turning movement to the left and collided into the raised concrete center island… causing the Subaru to spin out of control… then crashed into a tree and came to a rest within the raised concrete center island,” read the report of the incident.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
