Fiery 5 Freeway Crash Kills One In Santa Clarita

A deceased person was extricated from their vehicle in a ditch off the 5 Freeway early Sunday morning, after a solo-vehicle crash sparked flames in Santa Clarita.

Around 1:55 a.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to the 5 Freeway and McBean Parkway after hearing reports of flames in a ditch, according to Melanie Flores, a dispatch supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“We responded to reported flames in a ditch,” Flores said. “It turned out to be a fully-involved car fire with flames spreading into the brush.”

The maroon 2004 Toyota Avalon is estimated to have traveled down a dirt embankment along the east roadway edge of the northbound 5 Freeway, south of Valencia Boulevard, and rolled several times before striking a tree, according to Officer Perez, a spokesperson with the California Highway Patrol.

“As a result of the crash, the Toyota became fully engulfed in flames, causing fatal injuries to the solo occupant and driver,” Perez said. “The sequence of events is still under investigation.”

The occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead on arrival, according to CHP officials.

The identity has yet to be released to the public, pending the notification of their next of  kin.
