Head-On 5 Freeway Crash North Of Castaic Hospitalizes Alleged DUI Driver

An alleged DUI driver was sent to the hospital Thursday as a result of a head-on 5 Freeway crash north of Castaic, officials said.

Around 5:08 a.m. Thursday, California Highway Patrol dispatchers started receiving reports of a wrong-way driver on the northbound 5 Freeway near Smokey Bear Road, said Officer Josh Greengard with the CHP Newhall Area Office.

Shortly after the initial reports were made, CHP officials received reports of a head-on crash near Templin Highway.

“He went head-on with a UPS semi (truck),” Greengard said.

As a result of the crash, the driver of the vehicle, which was traveling south in northbound lanes, was transported to the hospital with minor injuries before being booked on DUI charges, Greengard said.

Due to the vehicle colliding with a semi-truck and not a smaller vehicle, Greengard said, “That saved other people’s lives.”

Officers with the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office issued a SigAlert blocking the No. 1, 2 and 3 lanes.

However, as of 7:30 a.m. Thursday, all lanes have been reopened.

The identity of the suspect has not been released as of Thursday morning, but he is a resident of Simi Valley, according to Greengard.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
