Teenager Killed In Fatal 14 Freeway Crash

A teenager was killed after a fatal 14 Freeway crash early Thursday morning in which “excessive speed, alcohol and drugs may be a contributing factor,” officials said.

At approximately 1:04 a.m. Thursday, officials with the California Highway Patrol received reports of a traffic collision on the southbound 14 Freeway north of Sierra Highway, according to Josh Greengard with the California Highway Patrol Newhall Office.

“A white Honda Civic was traveling southbound on SR-14. approaching Sierra Highway at a high rate of speed,” Greengard wrote in an official statement Thursday. “A red Volvo truck was stopped on the right shoulder of southbound on SR-14 truck route north of Sierra Highway ahead of the white Honda.”

The white Honda Civic collided into the rear of the red Volvo’s truck. The driver of the Civic was killed as a result of his injuries, while the driver of the Volvo was not injured, according to Greengard.

“Excessive speed, alcohol and drugs may be a contributing factor for the cause of this collision,” Greengard wrote.

The driver of the Civic was identified as 19-year-old Santiago Cabezas of Santa Ana, according to Greengard.

“This collision is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Newhall Area Office,” Greengard wrote.

The crash also resulted in the closure of one of two southbound truck route lanes of the 14 Freeway for approximately four hours.

Any witnesses are encouraged to contact the CHP’s Newhall office at (661) 294-5540.

Teenager Killed In Fatal 14 Freeway Crash

  1. Usually it’s the innocent person that’s killed and not the one causing the accident. Very sad.

  2. Shame, but, not, for HEADLINES!! Not a TEEN, an Adult with Possible illegal activity’s!!

  3. Isn’t this the picture to a different crash, where the white car crashed into a semi, a few nights ago? This isn’t a picture of a white and red car?! And this story doesn’t say anything about a semi! I’m confused!

  4. Snarky comments about the death of this man are a sad commentary about this group.

  5. So sad. My heart goes out to his parents. I just hope other young people learn from such a tragedy.

    • Sadly, young people will never learn from these tragedies. They believe these things only happen to others.

And what’s truly sad, is that more often than not, the innocent victims tend to suffer more.

  6. More legalization of drugs will increase this death rate. DUI hopefully only you die.

  7. Sorry for his death and family. We need to remind ourself that the emergency lane on the right is not a passing lane, I think this makes four, with eight fatalities.

  8. Santa Clarita has been such a disappointment to me. People are super angry here. Every time I walk to the store I take my own life in my hands. It’s sad how angry and entitled people are here behind the wheel. I am planning to move because of this.

  9. I was parked a couple hundred feet in back of the truck that he smashed into the driver of the White Honda Civic was traveling at a very high rate of speed the. The red Volvo semi had pulled over no more then a minute later is when the white Civic smashed into the rear end of that trailer it is very sad but yet an eye opener for all parents. The 14 freeway is a very dangerous highway and should not be underestimated.

  10. My heart goes out to his family!
Driving impaired means drugs and alcohol! When you are “legal” at the age of 21, this does not mean legal to drive impaired!! It’s not about “getting away with” driving impaired. There is a REASON for the establishment of this law. Our lives are fragile and precious and it’s time to think about the impact of your choices and behavior! BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS! If you care enough, MAKE THAT EFFORT for you, your friends and those innocent victims and MAKE WAVES! It’s worth it! ❤️
