A Valencia man has been identified after he was killed in a crash Monday on The Old Road in Stevenson Ranch.

Gene Sturdyvin, 84, of Valencia, died after being extricated from a crash on The Old Road and Pico Canyon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred just after 9 a.m. Monday, with reports of persons trapped, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“(Sturdyvin) was driving out of the driveway at Coco’s restaurant on The Old Road, intending to make a left turn,” said a CHP report.
The driver of the other vehicle was unable to avoid impact as the front of his Jeep collided with the left side of the victim’s Toyota, according to CHP.
Sturdyvin was transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at 9:55 a.m. Monday, about an hour after the crash.
Hospital personnel notified next of kin. At this time, alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be the cause of the crash, according to CHP.

A very sad thing for all involved. I certainly have concerns about the elderly drivers who have poor sight, hearing, reflexes and driving abilities, especially at an advanced age. One of the most difficult things I ever had to do was to tell my dad he could no longer drive. It was devastating for him.
I’ve had to do the same thing with my mother after cancer broke her back and she had to have surgery and learn to walk again before she passed away. “No more driving mom”. She was 57.
Many reasons why some people shouldn’t be driving.

A sad and tragic accident. It IS very dangerous trying to exit the Coco’s parking lot. People are speeding left and right at that intersection.
