Officials with the CHP Fort Tejon office announced that the Grapevine had been closed around 12:15 p.m. Monday.

“At 1150 hours we received a call from the Bakersfield communication center that snow was sticking on the Grapevine,” said Officer Josh Greengard of the CHP Newhall office.

Around 12:30 p.m., officials with the CHP Newhall area began the process of shutting down the 5 freeway within their jurisdiction, Greengard said.

“The I-5 at the Tejon Pass is impassable, due to snow and/or ice, for an unknown duration,” Greengard said. “The Newhall CHP will be closing the I-5 northbound at Parker Road, all traffic will be directed to turn around at Parker Road and all motorist will be advised to take alternate routes to their destinations.”

As a result of the weather, Operation Snowflake, the protocol established to keep motorists safe during heavy snow conditions on the Grapevine, has been put into effect.

Greengard recommended motorists use the SR-126 to US-101 to SR-166 to I-5, or SR-14 to SR-58 to SR-99 as alternate routes.

“Please bear in mind alternate routes are subject to closures with short/zero notice,” Greengard said.

It is unknown at this time how long the Grapevine will be shut down, but residents are encouraged to check the Caltrans website Quickmap for updates regarding road closures.

  1. “Operation Snowflake”. I would of thought, California of all States, would have objected to this name on the grounds of it being ‘politically incorrect’… Sorry, but this just made my day!

  2. Something needs to be done to keep the freeway traffic off of The Old Road in Castaic. People are trying to get to the store or pick up their children from school and cannot get there because of all of the extra vehicles on the tiny two lane road. There is no reason to see any big rigs (except moving vans) on this section as it’s nothing but residential. The Old Road is the only road we have to get anywhere; there is no alternate.
