Update: 11:30am Saturday, March 31, 2007
At approximately 1:40pm Friday afternoon, KHTS received a call from Councilman Bob Kellar alerting the radio station of a “significant traffic accident” involving two Sheriff’s vehicles.
Sergeant Darren Harris, with Sheriff's Department Media Relations, in an interview on KHTS AM-1220, provided an update with the latest condition of the crash victims. Deputy Laurie Baylis, 47, eight year veteran of the Sheriff's Department is in good condition with a severely sprained wrist and pain to her knees. She should be released this evening. The Explorer, David Aresca, 17, sustained a two-inch laceration to the top of his hand. He also should be released this evening. Deputy Michael Marion, 32, eight year veteran of the Sheriff's Department, is listed in fair condition. He suffered a punctured spleen but the injury will not require surgery. Deputy Marion is being kept in the hospital for further evaluation.
Just before 1:00pm the Sheriffs were responding to a request for backup at Golden Valley High School to deal with uncooperative students. Deputy Marion was turning left from southbound Deep Creek Drive onto eastbound Soledad Canyon Road. Deputy Baylis was driving west on Soledad Canyon Road. The two cars collided as they passed through the intersection.
After colliding, one car crashed into a block wall. Three people were transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. One car was driven by Deputy Laurie Baylis who was accompanied by David Aresca, a member of the Sheriff's Explorer program . They were in the car that crashed into the block wall. The other car was being driven by Deputy Michael Marian. According to one witness on the scene, that car was worked on for over half an hour by the Los Angeles County Fire Department with the ‘jaws of life’ to extricate the Deputy.
