The Los Angeles County Health Officer issued a Cold Weather Alert, expecting wind-chill temperatures in the low 30s in Santa Clarita Valley next week.
Next Tuesday, the county reminds residents to be mindful of the low temperatures by dressing appropriately, including wearing multiple layers of clothing, protecting heads, hands, and feet, and checking on family and pets frequently.
“Children, the elderly, and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during cold weather. Extra precaution should be taken to ensure they don’t get too cold when they are outside,” said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer.
The statement lists the symptoms and signs of a person suffering from hypothermia or frostbite and the proper action to take in the event.
In addition to taking precautions with attire and time spent outside, the county reminds residents only to use approved heating methods in homes such as electric, natural gas heaters, or fireplaces, and to have a working carbon monoxide monitor installed.
The alert also reminds those seeking shelter may do so at the Winter Shelter Program through the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.
