First Rain Of The Year Brings Nearly An Inch Of Rain, Mountain Snow To Santa Clarita Valley

The first rain of the year brought nearly an inch of rain to the  Santa Clarita Valley this weekend.

After nearly eight months of dry conditions and fire burning in and around the Santa Clarita Valley, winter weather finally arrived over the weekend.

Rain began falling over the Santa Clarita Valley Saturday evening, lasting throughout Monday morning for parts of the region, according to the National Weather Service, bringing nearly an inch of rain and snow to areas including:

  • DEL VALLE……………………. 0.86
  • NEWHALL……………………… 0.79
  • SAUGUS………………………. 0.60
  • CASTAIC JUNCTION……………… 0.47
  • CASTAIC……………………… 0.30

Frazier Park received 2 to 4 inches of snow, and the Tejon Pass received 1 to 3 inches of snow.

The snow in the Tejon Pass also closed the 5 Freeway in both directions through the Grapevine overnight due to unsafe driving conditions.

The recent rain and increased humidity levels help firefighters throughout Los Angeles County including the Hughes fire gain control of the recent fires and cool down residual hot spots.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
