Heavy Rain, Strong Winds Expected As Major Storm Moves Toward Santa Clarita

Santa Clarita residents may want to keep an eye on the forecast as a powerful storm system is expected to move into Los Angeles County late Sunday into Monday.

Forecasters say this storm could bring heavy rain, strong winds, possible thunderstorms and even snow in higher elevations.

The biggest impacts for Santa Clarita are expected Monday between 3 a.m. and 9 p.m., when the main portion of the storm moves through the area.

The storm’s heaviest rain is expected between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday, followed by scattered showers and a chance of thunderstorms into the evening.

Throughout the week, forecasters expect:

  • 2 to 4 inches of rain in Santa Clarita
  • 4 to 8 inches in mountains and foothills

Flooding Watch

A Flood Watch is currently expected to be in effect Monday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and officials say roadway flooding and small stream flooding are possible across Los Angeles County.

There’s also the potential for:

  • Mudslides
  • Rockslides
  • Minor debris flows
  • Flooded roadways

Meteorologists estimate there’s about a 20% chance of damaging debris flows with some of the heavier rain bands that move through Monday.

Wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph may develop Monday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., with widespread gusts of 35 to 55 mph.

Those kinds of winds could lead to:

  • Downed trees
  • Power outages
  • Hazardous driving conditions, especially for trucks and SUVs
  • Thunderstorms — And Even a Weak Tornado

Snow Could Impact the Grapevine

Snow levels are expected to start between 5,000 and 6,500 feet Monday, but may drop to as low as 3,000 to 4,500 feet by Tuesday night into Wednesday.

That means drivers traveling along Interstate 5 near the Grapevine could see delays or even closures later in the week.

Officials recommend allowing extra travel time, avoiding flooded roadways and staying weather aware throughout the week.
