Parts Of Santa Clarita Receive Over 2 Inches Of Rain In Recent Storm

The recent storm brought over 2 inches of rain to the Santa Clarita Valley this week, but is it enough to delay wildfire from igniting during a time known for dry conditions?

Monday into Tuesday, a storm rolled into Los Angeles County, bringing rain to the lower elevations and even snow to the surrounding resorts.

On Wednesday, the National Weather Service released the rainfall amounts of the Santa Clarita Valley.,

  • Newhall –  2.17 inches
  • Castaic – 1.42 inches
  • Del Valle –  1.25 inches
  • Saugus – 1.13 inches
  • Castaic Junction –  .94 inches

While this week’s storm came earlier in the year, a time that has been known to have gusty dry winds, fire officials say this storm is not going to put an end to a potentially dangerous fire season.

Although most residents in high-prone fire areas have cleared vegetation around their homes, Jonathan Torres, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, says all this rain will do is make grass grow back in cleared areas.

Torres recommends homeowners in the months to come to make sure all the grass or shrubs that sprout back up from the recent rain to remove and retrim the plants to maintain defensable fire space.

In the days to come, conditions are expected to heat up again, and Torres says all the rain Southern California received will quickly dry up, saying what precipitation we did get was “a drop in a bucket.”

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
