After the first rainless November in nearly three decades, wet and cold weather is back in Southern California this Thursday, with yet another storm system expected in the coming week.
The second storm in a week hit the Santa Clarita Valley on Thursday, bringing with it much-needed rain and cool winter weather, according to National Weather Service (NWS) officials.
As of Wednesday evening, 0.1 to 0.25 inches of rain was expected to fall over the Santa Clarita Valley during Thursday’s storm, according to NWS predictions.
Snow is expected to fall above 5,000 feet, with no major traffic delays due to inclement weather reported in the Grapevine as of Thursday morning.
Wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph are expected in the afternoon and early evening.
In addition to the rain, the Los Angeles County Health Officer is issuing a Cold Weather Alert due to the NWS forecast for low temperatures. Wind chill temperatures are expected to be below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Affected areas include:
- Santa Clarita Valley – Friday, December 10, through Sunday, December 12
- Antelope Valley – Friday, December 10, through Sunday, December 12
- Los Angeles City Mountains – Friday, December 10, through Saturday, December 11
- East San Fernando Valley – Saturday, December 11 through Sunday, December 12
“Children, the elderly, and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during cold weather. Extra precaution should be taken to ensure they don’t get too cold when they are outside,” said Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer. “There are places where people can go to stay warm, such as shelters or other public facilities. We also want to remind people not to use stoves, barbeques or ovens to heat their homes due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.”

Another storm is expected early next week, with widespread moderate to heavy rain expected throughout Southern California from late Monday, Dec. 13 to Tuesday, Dec. 14.
Between 1-3 inches of rain is expected in most areas, with 3-5 inches falling over the mountains. Residents are warned of possible debris flow in recent burn areas, as well as to take caution due to potential roadway flooding and wet commutes.
“Once again the #LARain is back! Remember to add a little extra time to your commute, slow down, and turn on your headlights & windshield wipers,” advised Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials on Thursday.
Several feet of mountain snow is expected above 7,000 feet next week, according to NWS officials.
