Clayton Kershaw is expected to be the 13th pitcher in MLB All-Star Game history to start the Midsummer Classic at his home team’s venue.
Dodger Stadium is the host site for the 92nd edition of the MLB All-Star Game, familiar digs for the starting pitcher of the National League (NL) team. It was announced earlier this week by Brian Snitker, the Atlanta Braves Manager, and manager for this year’s National League squad, that Clayton Kershaw would be the starting pitcher for the NL.
“I think because it’s at Dodger Stadium, I think there was a little bit more of like a ‘Man, I think it would be really cool to get to do and be a part of it,’” Kershaw said prior to the announcement.
Kershaw becomes just the 13th pitcher in the nearly 100-year history of the Midsummer Classic to earn the nod as the starting pitcher in his home team’s stadium. Cool, indeed.
In fact, despite eight previous All-Star appearances, this would be Kershaw’s first time starting an All-Star game. A future Hall of Famer and three-time Cy Young Award winner, Kershaw has put together a solid first half for the Dodgers despite being sidelined earlier in the season due to injury.
The 34-year-old is the owner of a 2.13 ERA, including 75 strikeouts in 71.2 innings pitched this season. Kershaw ended his first half on a high note, taking a perfect game into the 8th inning against the Los Angeles Angels last Friday evening in Anaheim.
“I’m so excited I get to do it here at Dodger Stadium. It means a lot. It means a lot to my family,” Kershaw said at Monday’s introductory press conference. “Hopefully I don’t screw it up too bad.”
Kershaw will oppose the Tampa Bay Rays 25-year-old left-hander Shane Mclanahan who will represent and start for the American League team. First pitch of the MLB All-Star Game is scheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m. and can be viewed on FOX.
