Dodgers Close Out Regular Season With 5-0 Win Over The Angels

The Los Angeles Dodgers (43-17) finished the shortened 2020 regular season with a 5-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels (26-34) and a league-best record of 43-17.

Sunday’s win completed the three-game sweep of the Angels in the “Freeway Series” and the Dodgers’ final series of the regular season.

A.J. Pollock started the afternoon off with a bang when he swatted a leadoff home run to left-center field for an early 1-0 Dodger lead and his fifteenth home run of the year.

It was a modified bullpen game for the Dodgers pitching staff as Victor Gonzalez got the start, but Dustin May put in the majority of the work with four innings pitched from the second through the fifth.

Pedro Baez, Blake Trenien, Brusdar Graterol each pitched an inning and Kenley Jansen closed things out in the ninth. Each Dodger pitcher went scoreless in their appearances on the mound.

The Dodgers loaded the bases in the third with no outs, but Corey Seager grounded into the double play. The hit did bring in Austin Barnes for the Dodgers’ second run of the day and put Joc Pederson at third.

Justin Turner then tacked on another run for a 3-0 Dodgers lead with an RBI single on a pop fly to shallow right field that the Angels defenders lost in the sun for an error.

While the Angels continued to struggle against the Dodgers pitching, Pollock made his presence felt again in the bottom of the seventh when he hit his second home run on the day, a two-run shot to center field, and expanded the Dodgers lead to 5-0.

The Angels never managed to get anything going offensively and the Dodgers cruised to the win and a league-best finish of 43-17.

Though the season was shortened, the Dodgers 71.6 percent winning percentage marks the highest winning percentage since the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates. The Dodgers were the first team since that 1909 Pirates team to win more than 70 percent of their games at 71.6 percent.

Now with playoff baseball set to kick off this week, the Dodgers will look to turn that regular season success into postseason success as they continue to seek their first World Series since 1988.

This time out the Dodgers have the benefit of Mookie Betts on the roster, they’ll have their first chance to see what a difference it makes when they open their postseason with the Milwaukee Brewers (29-31) at home in the Wild Card round on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
