Dodgers Go All In At Trade Deadline

The Dodgers front office was hard at work this past week sending and receiving over a dozen players in hopes of a late season push.

Headlining all the recent moves made by L.A. is without a doubt acquiring starting pitcher Jack Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers. The righty is having quite the 2024 campaign and was viewed as arguably the best pitcher traded before the deadline.

Flaherty is 7-5 as a starter on the season with a 2.95 ERA and 133 strikeouts which is good for 15th in the league. The 28-year old played at Harvard Westlake High School in L.A. and will provide a much needed boost for a very talented yet injury riddled rotation for the Dodgers.

The California native should have a home in the starting rotation even if it returns to full strength before the postseason but until then he’ll be asked to carry a bigger workload. In return for acquiring Flaherty the Dodgers shipped out prospects Thayron Liranzo (C) and Trey Sweeney (SS) to the Tigers.

Next up is the three team trade from July 29 which included the Dodgers, St.Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox. L.A. acquired shortstop Tommy Edman from the Cardinals and RHP Michael Kopech from the White Sox in return for LF Miguel Vargas, 2B Jeral Perez (prospect) and SS Alexander Albertus (prospect) while also getting 17-year old righty pitcher Oliver Gonzalez (prospect) from St.Louis.

Edman has spent all of 2024 on the IL after undergoing wrist surgery back in January and recently suffered an ankle sprain but is expected to join the Dodgers in the next couple of weeks if no further setbacks arise.

Kopech is another much needed addition for the crippled Dodgers bullpen as a reliable relief pitcher. The Texas native is averaging a fastball speed of 98.6 MPH and his nine saves put him at 28th in the league. His 4.63 ERA can raise concerns at first glance but his 62 K’s in 44.2 innings leaves some room for optimism.

The Dodgers also went in on some much needed outfield depth with RF Amed Rosario from the Tampa Bay Rays and CF Kevin Kiermaier from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for LHP Ryan Yarbrough and RHP Michael Flynn (prospect).

Rosario is back in L.A. after his 48 game stint last season when he was traded from the Cleveland Guardians to the Dodgers at around the same time last year. The right fielder is currently hitting .307 on the year in 76 appearances with the Rays.

Kiermaier has been on the Dodgers radar over the past years but they haven’t been able to get him to L.A. until now. The four-time Gold Glove winner may no longer be in his prime hitting below .200 for the first time in his career but can still provide some meaningful depth in a potential deep playoff run before he retires at the end of this season.

The 34-year old will also look to add a ring to his resume after his World Series title hopes with the Rays were thwarted by the Dodgers back in 2020, a full circle moment for Kiermaier.
