The Los Angeles Dodgers (38-16) didn’t put up a run until the seventh inning of their Sunday matchup with the Colorado Rockies (23-29) and couldn’t overcome an early deficit en route to a 6-3 loss.
Sunday’s game was the only loss of the Dodgers’ four-game road series against the Rockies, powered by a solid outing from Rockies starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela, who kept the Dodgers scoreless through the first six innings.
Tony Gonsolin was nearly as effective, starting on the mound for the Dodgers and started the night red-hot as he threw six consecutive strikeouts through the game’s first two innings.
After another scoreless inning in the third, Gonsolin loaded the bases and gave up a two-RBI double to Josh Fuentes in the bottom of the fourth for the game’s first scores and a 2-0 Rockies lead.
The tough inning behind him, Gonsolin went three up, three down in the fifth and was relieved at the top of the sixth for Blake Trenien.
Trenien opened up his appearance with a strikeout but began to struggle as he gave up three consecutive singles to Charlie Blackmon, Trevor Story and Josh Fuentes, with Blackmon scoring on the Fuentes single for a 3-0 lead.
Dave Roberts had seen enough and trotted out to the mound to end Trenien’s outing with Victor Gonzalez coming in to replace him.
A line drive to Cody Bellinger off of Gonzalez secured the second out of the inning, but the Rockies added on two more runs with a pair of singles from Elias Diaz and Ryan McMahon to expand their lead to 5-0 before Gonzelez could get the Dodgers out of the inning.
Senzatela had gone six scoreless innings at this point, but back-to-back walks to Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger with one out was enough to end his outing and he was replaced by Yency Almonte.
The Dodgers didn’t take full advantage as they only managed to chip away a single run from the Rockies’ lead on an Edwin Rios RBI single on a line drive to center field to make it 5-1.
Perhaps the best chance for the Dodgers to get back into the game came in the eighth, when they managed to load the bases with two outs and Cody Bellinger at the plate, but Daniel Bard got the Rockies out of the jam, striking Bellinger out swinging.
The Rockies tacked on another run in the eighth to increase the gap to 6-1.
The Dodgers wouldn’t go down without a fight however as they had one more opportunity to even things up in the game’s final inning.
With runners at first and third A.J. Pollock closed the gap to 6-3 with a two-RBI ground ball single to center field.
A walk to Corey Seager brought Chris Taylor to the plate with two outs and the tying runs on base.
Taylor swung at the first pitch and grounded out to end the game.
Even with the loss, the Dodgers still won the four-game road series 3-1 and now return to Los Angeles to finish the regular season at home, starting with a three-game series with the Oakland A’s beginning Tuesday at 6:40 p.m.
