After starting slowly against the Padres in the Seoul Series, the Dodgers flipped a switch in the eighth inning to earn their first regular season win.
After nearly a month of Spring Training, the Dodgers stepped up to the plate in their first game of the season against the San Diego Padres in South Korea to showcase some of their newest players.
One of the biggest signings was Shohei Ohtani, who signed a 10-year, $700 million contract. Despite a bomb threat against Ohtani before the game, he was still ready to play in his Dodgers regular season debut.
Out of his five trips to the plate, Ohtani had two hits and an RBI that brought in Gavin Lux for the game’s final run.
“Just a good night overall for Shoei,” said Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts. “The bigger picture, it’s significant because you’ve got such a generational talent that is on your ballclub in a big market in Los Angeles.”
Another player making his debut was the Santa Clarita native Tyler Glasnow, who had three strikeouts. Glasnow managed to keep the game within striking distance, only allowing two runs, two hits and four walks over five innings.
While Mookie Betts has been with the Dodgers for four years, the six-time Gold Glove winner is moving down from right field to play shortstop for the first time.
With a number of new signings and returning stars, the Dodgers were expected to come out of the gates swinging, but the boys in blue did not have a booming start like they wanted.
The Padres struck first in the bottom of the third. Xander Bogaerts’s RBI single into center field brought in Tyler Wade for the first run of the 2024 MLB season.
The Padres maintained a 2-1 lead coming out of the fourth inning, during which both teams scored runs.
Heading into the eighth inning, the Dodgers turned their fortune around when Max Muncy started with a walk against Wandy Peralta. In another debut for the Dodgers, Teoscar Hernández singled off Jhony Brito. After a James Outman walk, the bases were loaded and Kike Hernadez brought Muncy in for a run with a sacrifice fly hit to left field to tie the game.
With both teams tied at two apiece, Lux hit a chopper to Jake Cronenworth that went through the webbing of his glove, allowing Teoscar to run in for a 3-2 lead over the Padres.
With RBIs from both Betts and Ohtani, the Dodgers took command with a 5-2 lead.
The Dodgers did not allow another run for the rest of the game, ringing in their first win of the 2024 season.

In game two, Glasnow is set to take a break while Yoshinobu Yamamoto takes over at the mound as the pitcher for the Dodgers.
The Dodgers and Padres will finish the Seoul Series at the Gocheok Sky Dome in South Korea on Thursday at 3:05 a.m. Pacific Time.
