Joey Gallo was front and center on defense and at the plate as the Dodgers tagged Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcántara for six runs and completed a three-game sweep of Miami over the weekend.
The Los Angeles Dodgers were uncharacteristically quiet at this year’s trade deadline, avoiding splashy moves like the team has pulled off so often in years past and instead opting for complimentary pieces to add to a first-place team.
Despite their reserved stance at the deadline, the Dodgers still made noise, involved in one of the more curious trades at the deadline when they acquired outfielder Joey Gallo- who, to put it kindly- had a turbulent tenure with the New York Yankees prior to joining Los Angeles. So far in Dodger blue, it’s been nothing but smooth sailing for the Las Vegas native.
On Sunday, Gallo shined like one of the bright stars of Hollywood, making a diving catch along the foul line, throwing a runner out at the plate from left field, and recording his first multi-hit game as a Dodger, as Los Angeles scored six runs off NL Cy Young favorite Sandy Alcántara en route to a 10-3 victory to complete a weekend sweep of the Miami Marlins.
“I’ve been feeling pretty good,” Gallo said after the game. “We have a great team. It’s easy to come in here and take at-bats and just try to be a team guy.”
Things have certainly gone Gallo’s way since changing teams and coasts. In 82 games with New York this year, Gallo slashed .159/.282/.339. In 12 games (eight starts) with the Dodgers, he’s slashed .267/.371/.667 in 35 plate appearances. His defense never came into question even during his anemic stretch at the plate with the Yankees. With what must feel like a 100-pound weight lifted off his shoulders, Gallo is performing both in the field and at the plate for his new team.
“He’s bought in, and every day it seems like he’s getting more and more consistent. He’s taking better at-bats, he’s taking better swings,” Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts said of Gallo.
Gallo hit a triple in the 2nd inning and would come around to score on a Cody Bellinger two-run home run before singling in the 4th inning and later scoring on a Mookie Betts base hit. But his day truly began in the 1st inning, when his throw from left field to home plate gunned down Marlins infielder Joey Wendle at the plate, helping Dodgers rookie starting pitcher Ryan Pepiot exit with a scoreless 1st inning.
“For me, I really want to work for the pitchers,” Gallo said. “They’re always working their butts off. I think the least we can do is give 100 percent out there.”
The contribution helped Pepiot have one of his better outings of late, gutting through six innings allowing two runs and striking out seven. The Dodgers lineup did what it does best, scoring early and often, including three run-scoring hits from catcher Will Smith, and a home run from infielder Max Muncy in the 7th inning, his 16th long ball of the season.
Just as Muncy once was- outcasted by his previous team only to see his career revitalized with Los Angeles- Gallo may be the newest reclamation project for the Dodgers that will pay dividends down the stretch run of the season. Things went my way today and it went our way this whole series,” Gallo said. “It’s exciting.”
For the team with the best record in baseball running roughshod over their National League West counterparts, it certainly is an exciting time for the Boys In Blue.
The Dodgers open a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers Monday evening. The two teams split a four-game series last week in Milwaukee, including a splendid outing from Dodgers starting pitcher Julio Urias in game three of that series. Urias will be on the bump Monday for the Dodgers as he opposes Brewers starting pitcher Eric Lauer beginning at 7:10 p.m. PDT at Dodger Stadium.

I believe that you have misspelled the name of the Marlin’s pitcher – not just once, but multiple times including the headline. His last name is Alcántara – not Alcantra. You need to buy another vowel.
