Mookie Betts’ First Dodgers Walk-Off Powers Dodgers To Sweep Of Rockies

Dodgers complete sweep of Colorado, extend N.L. West lead.

The Dodgers reached the halfway mark in their season last night entering play with a 51-29 record. But it was the basement-dwelling Colorado Rockies who, despite just one hit through nine innings, found themselves in a 1-1 tie with the team that holds the best record in the National League.

The Dodger’s high-powered offense wouldn’t slug their way to victory this evening. Instead, the team would squeak out two runs in the most unconventional of ways, concluding with a Mookie Betts’ walk-off infield single in the 9th inning to complete a three-game sweep of their division rivals.

“Those guys have been really, really good,” Betts said. “They just continue to put good at-bats together. They’re the reason we are where we are now.”

After a throwing error from Dodgers centerfielder Cody Bellinger in the 6th inning allowed Rockies’ left fielder Kris Bryant to score from third, the Dodgers’ vaunted lineup entered the 7th inning trailing 1-0.

Rockies’ starting pitcher Jose Ureña had navigated trouble throughout his first 6.2 innings, including a much-needed double-play ball in the 7th inning off the bat of Jake Lamb that erased a Justin Turner leadoff single.

But after back-to-back two-out singles from Bellinger and Gavin Lux, Ureña gave way to Rockies reliever Jake Bird, who loaded the bases after a hit batsman before uncorking a wild curveball to Betts that went to the backstop and scored Bellinger with the tying run.

A gutty effort from the Dodgers pitching staff, including 5.2 innings from starter Mitch White and a combined 3.1 innings of scoreless relief from David Price, Yency Almonte, and Craig Kimbrel kept the Rockies at bay.

Dodgers Walk-Off

Bellinger and Lux, once again front and center in the Dodger’s latest rally, each singled in front of catcher Will Smith who walked to load the bases with no outs in the 9th- setting up a climactic moment for Betts.

With grandiose visions of a deep drive over the wall to send the Dodgers faithful into the night, Betts delivered. Just not how most baseball movies would draw it up.

Betts chopped a 1-0 pitch over the head of Rockies’ reliever Daniel Bard just behind the mound. Rockies shortstop Jose Iglesias and Bryant congregated to the ball, but it was Iglesias who cut off Bryant and couldn’t find his gripping on the throw, promptly spiking it directly into the mound, as Bellinger came home with the winning run.

The Dodgers would score two runs on the evening. One on a wild pitch, and the other on a ball that traveled 75 feet. Not exactly how the Dodgers envisioned scoring runs at the beginning of the season. Yet it was enough to give the team their 52nd victory in the 81st game of the season, putting the club on pace for 102 wins this season.

The Dodgers now open a four-game series at Dodger Stadium with the Chicago Cubs this evening at 7:10 PM PDT. Tony Gonsolin looks to add to his resume in a bid to be the starting pitcher for the upcoming National League All-Star Game, as he opposes Cubs starting pitcher Mark Leiter Jr.
