At just 19 years old, local singer-songwriter Nathan Lindsay seems to be on the fast track to success after the release of his debut pop-rock album “Your Tale is Behind You” last October, with a second album already in the works.

Recorded entirely in the Saugus home studio of his producer and manager Randal Yamamoto, Lindsay’s vision for his work is more than just making good music — it’s about connecting with others who are struggling in their lives, and helping them see that they’re not alone.

“It’s really to let people know that everyone is going through these kinds of things,” Lindsay told the KHTS Features team inside the cozy studio. “The project in itself is really for me, because I really love music and that’s what I want to do, but my hope is that it can also reach out to other people and let them know, too, that there’s someone who gets it.”

Growing up in the SCV, Lindsay noted he often had trouble expressing himself, which sent him down a dark path during his early high school years.

“I just never really felt like I could say something to someone and they would really hear it,” Lindsay recalled. “I was kind of lost for awhile, having a really hard time, and music really saved me and brought me to this totally awesome place.”

It’s thanks to what he called the “universal language” of music that Lindsay now feels he can finally fully connect with others, bringing a newfound purpose and drive into his life.

“I gave up a lot of stuff in the past year or so and put both feet, both arms, my whole body into this,” he said, “because it’s truly all I want.”

Lindsay described his songwriting process as a meditation, noting he tends to grab his guitar and play any chords that come to him, singing whatever words feel right in the moment.

“It’s usually something that’s relatable to something that I’m going through,” he said. “For the most part, inspiration kind of hits randomly. I could be in the kitchen and my dad says something funny, and it inspires a song in me.”

It was Lindsay’s father, David, that first introduced him to Yamamoto, who has produced a number of albums in his home state of Hawaii and here in Los Angeles via Great Hook Productions. David was taking guitar lessons from Yamamoto at World Music in Newhall when the store closed, and Yamamoto offered to continue teaching him at his home in Saugus.

“My Dad asked Randal, he said, ‘Hey, I see all this recording equipment in your studio. Is there any way you could teach my son how to use it, maybe give him a couple tips?’” Lindsay recalled. “So Randal and I met up, and … once he realized how dedicated I was to it, and how this is really what I want to do, we kind of discovered that magic in each other and were like — let’s do this.”

Over the next six months or so, Lindsay and Yamamoto put their heads together to create “Your Tale is Behind You,” producing up to six different versions of each of the album’s 12 tracks before final song choices were made.

Yamamoto has recruited the help of industry professional Lance Fooks for the production of Lindsay’s second album, which is set to be recorded at Fooks’ studio in North Hollywood.

“The studio is on a much bigger scale of gear and space and a lot more equipment that we can put to use,” Lindsay said. “We’re going to bust this (album) out much quicker and it’s going to be 10 times better.”

A brand new single called “Yeah, I’ll Stay” is the first of three expected to be released before the album wraps up in the next year or so, along with three alternate versions of songs from “Your Tale is Behind You.”

“It’s just a really magical feeling, because I feel so lucky to be accelerating at a degree and level that other people, it takes them a long time to get to,” Lindsay said. “I really have this powerful feeling inside me, like this is it. I could feel it all coming, and people are really going to like this stuff — I just know it.”
