A 39-year-old Hispanic man died Friday night after his car went over the side of the road and down a 100 foot embankment in Saugus, officials said.

Fire Department officials responded to a call of a car over the side of the road near San Francisquito Canyon Road and Dry Gulch around 6:30 p.m., said Supervisor Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The coroner listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma from the crash, according to Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Emergency personnel, including members of the Santa Clarita Valley’s Search and Rescue Team, worked for nearly an hour to try to rescue a man trapped in his vehicle, Pittman said.

The victim, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was declared dead at 7:19 p.m., he said.

The Coroner’s Office does not release the name involved in any death investigation until the next of kin on record have been notified.

Traffic was both north- and southbound on San Francisquito Canyon Road was stopped for several hours Friday night while the body was recovered.
