The primary goal of the system is to provide public safety by deterring and preventing crime, incarcerating individuals who commit a crime and reintegrating criminals back into the community, according to the Bail Resource Center & Academy.

“Criminal sentencing laws are the basis for the criminal justice system,” said Inessa Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita. “These laws define crimes and specify punishments.”

Crimes are divided into three categories based on the seriousness of the offense: felonies, misdemeanors and infractions.

The most serious type of crime is a felony, which may result in the offender being sentenced to a minimum of one year in state prison. A few examples of felonies include murder, robbery, rape and burglary of a residence.

“Most offenses seen by bail bonds companies like All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita are felonies,” Chavez said.

Misdemeanors– such as assault, petty theft and public drunkenness –are less serious than felonies, and may lead to the offender being sentenced to probation, county jail, a fine or a combination of these.

The last, and least serious, type of offense is called an infraction and is usually punishable by a fine. Many motor vehicle citations, like speeding or running a red light, are infractions.

“While it’s helpful for the public to have a basic knowledge of the criminal justice system in California, our bail agents have extensive knowledge of the system and can explain the process if you or a loved one are arrested,” Chavez said. “Just give us a call, 24-7.”
