The law enforcement officer looks up the charge in the Los Angeles County Bail Schedule which has the guidelines for where your bail should be set.

This sets your bail at a certain amount, which depending on the crime you allegedly committed, you can call a bail agent and get bailed out.

If you decide to bail out, your arrangement date (first court appearance) will be pushed back to  about four weeks. This will give you extra time to get your affairs together and to consult with counsel before you appears in court.
