On Jan. 8, Dubin and Smith brought on special guests Zone Leader and Deputy Yesenia Holwager and Staff Writer Jessica Boyer.

“This show helps connect our community to the law enforcement to give all of us insight into what goes on in our valley,” said Jeff Chavez, owner of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita.

Holwager is the zone leader for the Stevenson Ranch and West Ranch area.  She regularly patrols the area and monitors and writes the crime reports for the area each week.

Here is a transcription of the latest “Neighborhood Watch”:

Perry Smith  — Welcome Santa Clarita Valley. We’re here on you “Neighborhood Watch,” where twice a month we talk about all things Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station outreach and crime prevention-related brought to you by All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita. With the studio in me, with me in the studio today. At least some of us have coffee.

Josh Dubin —  I don’t. And why is that Perry?

Perry Smith  — That’s Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Crime Prevention Unit.  You demanded coffee on your way over here and I told you I’m not a barista.  You gave me little notice and we’re having an issue with the Keurig in the office.

Josh Dubin —  A couple things. One, it was not a little notice, it was a half an hour. Two, I did not demand, I politely asked. Three, who breaks a Keurig?

Perry Smith  — Let me see if there was a please in your text.

Josh Dubin — Jessica “Bomb Threat” Boyer?

Jessica Boyer — I think it’s kind of sad that we don’t have a coffee maker in the newsroom.

Josh Dubin — Bxactly. This is a newsroom/ radio station/ media outlet organization and there is no coffee in this building.

Jessica Boyer —  But…

Perry Smith  — The text reads “Hopefully you have coffee I haven’t had any.” I guess that passes for a polite request.

Jessica Boyer —  I’d like to point out that Perry and I did come prepared with our own coffee.

Perry Smith  — Thats darn right. Jessica Boyer’s voice with me in the studio today from our news team and Deputy Yesenia Holwager. How am I on the pronunciation?

Yesenia Holwager —  Perfect. Perfect.

Josh Dubin —  So.

Perry Smith  — If I can, sorry, go ahead. Go back to your traffic.

Josh Dubin —  I’m sorry, back to the coffee for a minute. If Perry really came prepared, he would know that he has two special guests in the studio today and he would have brought coffee.

Perry Smith  — I’m going to delegate that to my station manager boss Kyle Jellings. Is providing coffee, is that in the realm of….

Josh Dubin —  And on todays episode of pass the buck…

Perry Smith  — Wow. So today if I can run down the show now. We are going to talk about the top crime stories, This is our first show of 2015 and you want to start with this adversarial, antagonistic approach. Alright. Alright. We’re going to talk about the top crime stories of 2014.  Some of our favorite crime stories, some of our head scratchers, some of our ‘what were they thinking moments’ if you will thats just my opinion here.  Josh Dubin is just looking around. ‘I have no opinion,’ he says.

Josh Dubin —  What else are we talking about?

Perry Smith  — We have Deputy Yesenia Holwager, the zone leader for Stevenson Ranch area. There’s Stevenson Ranch and a couple other areas?

Yesenia Holwager —  There’s West Ranch.

Perry Smith  — And then we’re going to talk a little bit about that. a little bit about what’s going on at the American Beauty condo complex. Cus some Sheriff’s Station deputies have been doing some intervention there and fighting crime there. What else do we have going on there.  Josh, you have some social media things to talk about.

Josh Dubin — Today is Elvis’s 80th birthday.

Perry Smith  — Today is Elvis’s birthday. The king. You know I’m not a big Elvis fan.

Josh Dubin —  How can you not be a big Elvis fan?

Perry Smith  — How can you be an Elvis fan? You were like not even born when he died.

Josh Dubin ––  His music is still good. That’s neither here nor there.

Perry Smith  — Jessica?

Jessica Boyer —  I never listen to Elvis.

Josh Dubin —  Whose birthday is it?

Yesenia Holwager —  Stephen Hawking’s.

Josh Dubin —  it’s Stephen Hawking’s birthday?

Perry Smith  — Yeah, yeah. Stephen Hawking. That’s still impacting us. Yesenia, are you a big Elvis fan?

Yesenia Holwager —  No.

Perry Smith  — That’s one of four.

Josh Dubin — Sorry.

Yesenia Holwager —  Sorry Joshie.

Perry Smith  — You had a couple interesting things on your Facebook page. Can we talk about that? Can we get that going?

Josh Dubin —  Yes, absolutely. Is that what we’re going to start with? Okay, lets start with social media in 2015 because then were going to transition to these top stories of 2014 that you want to talk about.  So in 2014, we had a number of incidents in the Santa Clarita Valley involving mostly young people posting, what some would consider, inappropriate things on social media.

Perry Smith  — Some were careless, some were criminal.

Josh Dubin —  Right.

Perry Smith  — Some were child pornography.

Josh Dubin —  We have the wide range from child pornography to threats.

Perry Smith  — Were really thought through.

Josh Dubin —  Right. So were starting off 2015 in the crime prevention unit. We’ve been doing some outreach. We’ve been talking to people. Talking to parents and this actually started in 2014 and in 2013 when we did the thing at city hall with the parents and the city staff. You were there. Regarding social media and some safety stuff like that. And then we did another presentation, a larger presentation with the Hart District.

Perry Smith  — How many parents come out? The city hall one was pretty packed but I didn’t make it to the Hart District one.

Josh Dubin ––  The one that we did, was held at Placerita Junior High and there was about 200 people there.

Perry Smith  — That’s good because we get so many questions about this stuff and it’s such a challenging situation.

Josh Dubin —  So social media is obviously here.

Perry Smith  — Here to stay.

Josh Dubin — Yeah, here to stay and we are encouraging, and you have done many stories on this, so I would say you’re encouraging also that parents have an open dialogue with their kids about the positive aspects of social, the power of social media and how to use it responsibly and once you hit send, there are no take backs and you really need to be aware of what your are posting.

Perry Smith  — The key for parents is just to always be over their child’s shoulder watching, right?

Josh Dubin — Well, you know at least have an open dialogue, a computer in a common area, have an open dialogue about what’s appropriate and what is not. If they have a Facebook account, maybe you should create a Facebook account and friend them and see what they’re doing. Have a dialogue, if they have a Twitter account. Get to know the social media that they are using. It changes day-by-day. Try and keep up on that stuff. Know what devices they’re using when they’re using it.  If they’re using their social media in the middle of the night, maybe that’s not a good idea.

Perry Smith  — If someone does have any questions, can they call the Sheriff’s Station and ask for someone who has information how to keep up with all this stuff?

Josh Dubin — All of the zone leaders talk about this all of the time. I’m always available. Anybody in the crime prevention unit will be able to assist with that. You’ve done stories, we put it on Nixle.

Perry Smith  — Well, we have to take a quick commercial break. I want to talk about the party you had posted about that had drawn some police activity. Well, talk about that and some other things when we get back on our ‘Neighborhood Watch’ brought to you by All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita on your Hometown Station AM 1220 KHTS.
