Santa Clarita audiologist Nola Aronson of Advanced Audiology is now offering what she called the first “true” artificial intelligence, or AI, hearing aid at her office following the product’s release in September.

“It’s so amazing,” Aronson said. “It not only tracks your steps, your heart rate — you will not have to use a Fitbit anymore — it measures your brain activity so you see how you’re doing in your listening environments and how your brain is functioning.”

Created by the only all American-made hearing aid manufacturer Starkey, the AI hearing aid has the capability to measure brain and hearing activity, according to Aronson.

“If you have a hearing loss and you miss so much information over time, you’re more prone to getting Alzheimer’s and dementia,” she said. “So now through this hearing aid, you’re able to measure that involvement of how you listen (in) all kinds of listening environments you’re in.”

Another revolutionary new feature of the AI hearing aid is its ability to translate languages.

“It will tell you in your ear what the person is saying,” Aronson said, adding that all these innovative features require the use of a smartphone app.

Above all else, Aronson noted that the quality of sound the AI hearing aid produces is unparalleled compared to more standardized hearing aids.

“I put a pair on because I wanted to hear the translation of the languages,” she said. “It was so clear and crisp… I can’t even hear the cars in the background because it’s not paying attention to all the noise. It doesn’t have a lot of the circuit noise and the distortion, it has clarity.”

The AI hearing aid also allows Aronson to make adjustments from her office without the need for the patient to come in, which allowed her to continue taking care of one patient in his thirties, whom she has seen since he was seven years old, now that he’s moved away.

“It has Telehealth built into it, so with a code, he hooks up to my computer and now, from Pismo Beach, if he’s having a problem with his hearing aid, I can adjust it from my computer,” Aronson said. “He wrote me on Instant Messenger last night (about) how thankful he is, that these are the best pair of hearing aids he’s ever had and that he thanks me for taking such good care of him all his life.”

Aronson continued, “As I get older and I’m thinking about, well it’s getting time to retire, but with all this great new technology, it’s so exciting for me because I actually am changing people’s lives and giving them back their quality of life. I don’t think I will retire anytime soon now… I’m finally doing what I’ve dreamed about doing for so many years, and that’s really helping people.”

Aronson encouraged the community to “stay tuned” for the next Advanced Audiology open house with the manufacturer representative Oct. 30 and 31, where attendees will have the chance to take a no-obligation “test drive” in their own environment and “hear for yourself.”
