Farmers Market Returns To Old Town Newhall Thursday

Partnership promises new and different market with room to grow.

The Old Town Newhall Farmers Market will open for the season Thursday, April 10 as “The Market On Market,” sited on a closed-off block of Market Street between Main Street and Walnut Street. Hours for the market will be from 3 to 7 p.m., the market season for 2008 is expected to run through October 30.

The City has partnered with Whole Foods market to produce the weekly market. Whole Foods relationship with organic farmers and their regional approach to their produce section seemed a perfect match to help develop a growing market and the Whole Foods store in Valencia will help advertise the weekly market.

In the partnership, Whole Foods will get booth fees from produce vendors, which will go to their Whole Planet Foundation dedicated to preserving rain forests. The City will get craft booth fees.

Phil Lantis, of the city’s Arts and Events office, said that the market will also feature much more than produce. A performance stage will feature local singers and musicians, there will be information booths on local stores and nonprofit organizations, cooks from Tresierras Market will be making delicious food for consumption at the market or ready for take-home. Future plans include visual art displays and cooking demonstrations.
