A Practical Guide To Decluttering And Organizing The Home

This year 77% of households will be spring cleaning their homes and clearing out the clutter. Among the regular cleaning chores, they will also find satisfaction in tackling overflowing closets and dealing with home offices filled with paperwork. With local waste disposal initiatives, advice from professional organizers, and inspiration from the recent KHTS Home and Garden Show, residents in Santa Clarita will be motivated to join them in cleaning, decluttering, and tidying up their homes.

Reclaiming Space

One LA-based organizer suggests starting with the dining table, where the clutter of family life quickly accumulates. Reclaiming the space with a table runner prevents the build up of homework, unsolicited mail and craft materials from the latest school project. Having kids in the house also tends to go hand in hand with the accumulation of large toys, skateboards and bikes that block the hallway. Clearing this clutter immediately restores some order to heavily used areas of the home, but then the problem arises of where to keep these items. Woodtex.com understands that storage and a dedicated area for hobbies is important. By installing a shed in the yard, large items and specialised equipment can be kept safely out of the way but still easily accessible for use when needed.

Clearing Out Clutter

Once all the essential items have found a home, it’s time to declutter and sort unwanted items into piles for donation, recycling or trash. Santa Clarita has recently launched a campaign to allow residents to dispose of large items free of charge. “Don’t Trash Your Community” aims to reduce illegal dumping in the area by collecting bulky items like furniture and appliances, and it will be encouraging locals to report sightings of any abandoned items. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program also gives residents the opportunity to take items such as motor oil, paints and chemical pesticides for safe disposal at one of its regular collection events held throughout LA county.

Establishing Routines

Following the advice of Santa Clarita’s professional organizers, when good routines are established, it’s much quicker and easier to tidy away a few items everyday in order to keep on top of the clutter. In addition, setting up regular storage spots for items such as remote controls and car keys saves time, money and energy. Americans spend two and a half days every year searching for lost items, and close to $3 billion in replacing them. Installing simple systems such as a letter tray for mail and a hook near the front door for car keys, means important items are always to hand.

Once unwanted and unnecessary clutter is removed from the home, a good spring clean can be very satisfying. With the addition of new storage space and established routines, everything has its place and it will become much easier to maintain a clean, tidy and well organized home.
