A wetsuit is just a wetsuit, right? Wrong! Just like the differences in motorcycle jerseys, there are differences in wetsuits.
A surfing wetsuit is one thing. A personal watercraft wetsuit is something else. What’s the difference? Check it out!
Surfing Wetsuits
The first thing to think about is how thick the wetsuit is. When you’re on the waves, you want to be as light as possible. Maneuvering from your stomach to your feet should be quick and easy and you just can’t do that with a lot weighing you down. Of course, a thinner wetsuit provides less insulation, but who surfs in cold water? You do? Well, just make sure the seams are sealed, not flatlock.
Next, take a look at the stretch. Wetsuits are made out of neoprene, but they come in different grades. Flexibility is key when you’re doing a bottom turn, using the backdoor or heading through the barrel! Superior-grade suits come with the highest amount of stretch. They make wetsuits for adults and children wetsuits.
PWC Wetsuits
Kayakers, jet skiers and other serious water enthusiasts will head out to sea no matter the temperature, so that thicker wetsuit will be the key to avoiding hypothermia! They don’t need too much in terms of flexibility, so a 5/4/3mm wetsuit could be just the ticket. Flatlock seams are fine as long as you’re hanging out in the warmth, but once you head into colder waters, you’ll wish you went with a suit that was sealed and taped.
As for stretch, it’s really up to how much you get into the sport. A standard-grade neoprene is fantastic if you’re just going for a cruise around the lake, but a good- or great-grade neoprene is your choice for a better fit and a wilder ride!
Find Your Perfect Suit Today
Finding the right suit is not a perfect science, which is great because you’re hitting the waves, not the books. Just like motorcycle gloves, you do want to get the perfect fit. Pay attention to thickness, seams and stretch, and you’ll be the most relaxed guy on the water!
