Managing Chronic Pain: An Approach For Better Outcomes

Chronic pain is one of the most pervasive and complex conditions affecting people in every age group. It is a multifaceted condition that involves physical, psychological, and lifestyle components, and requires a comprehensive and individualized approach for the best outcomes.

The most common approach to chronic pain management is medication, which comes with risks of side effects, addiction, and often fails to provide sustained relief. However, there are other more effective and cost-efficient interventions such as diet and exercise, PhotoBioModulation (low-level laser therapy), pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), and spinal manipulative therapy (chiropractic) that can help alleviate chronic pain symptoms and improve an individual’s quality of life.

Lifestyle Interventions:

There is a lot of evidence supporting the influence of lifestyle in chronic pain. A single change in diet or physical activity can have a significant impact on the intensity and frequency of pain. A diet that emphasizes whole, unprocessed foods, and reduces sugar, caffeine, and animal proteins, can prevent inflammation, reduce symptoms related to chronic conditions such as arthritis, and promote weight loss, reducing the load on the body.

Exercise interventions such as resistance training, Tai Chi, or yoga, have shown to be very effective in reducing chronic pain while improving physical function and mobility, muscle strength, and balance.

An individualized lifestyle approach that incorporates other mind-body practices such as meditation, relaxation techniques or counseling, can help address underlying emotional or psychological aspects that may worsen chronic pain.

Photobiomodulation and PEMF:

PhotoBioModulation therapy (PBM) / Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), utilizes light energy to promote tissue regeneration and reduce inflammation, and has been used for decades to manage various forms of pain, including chronic pain. PhotoBioModulation therapy also increases the production of ATP, which can lead to faster healing of tissues and reduced pain signals.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapies have demonstrated promising results from scientific reviews and trials on reducing pain symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, and others. These therapies can be used alongside other standard treatments and have no significant side effects.

Spinal Manipulative Therapy:

Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT) or chiropractic adjustments, are performed to improve spinal alignment and reduce inflammation at the joints, muscles, and nerves. SMT has also been used in the treatment of chronic low back pain, neck pain, and headaches with positive results.

The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that chiropractic care improves functional status and reduces pain symptoms in individuals with chronic low back and neck pain. SMT can also help prevent chronic pain conditions by addressing musculoskeletal dysfunctions, leading to fewer muscular imbalances, and improved joint flexibility, and range of motion.

Slow Medicine principles:

Slow Medicine Principles are grounded in a more patient-centric approach to treatment for chronic pain. The principles go beyond symptom relief to focus on the patient, considering their lifestyle, relationships, and other psychosocial factors.

This approach encourages the use of the least harmful interventions with minimum side effects and emphasizes the importance of informed decision-making by patients about their care.

Slow Medicine principles have reduced the reliance on more costly treatments, invasive procedures, and prescription drugs, and led to better pain management and patient satisfaction.

Conclusion:

Chronic pain is a complex and widespread condition that demands an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to management. Treatment strategies such as diet and exercise interventions, PhotoBioModulation therapy, spinal manipulative therapy, and slow medicine principles, offer alternatives to traditional pain management, and reduce reliance on medication with harmful side effects.

Lifestyle interventions can go a long way in preventing chronic pain, PhotoBioModulation, spinal manipulative therapy, and slow medicine principles can help in managing the symptoms associated with existing chronic pain conditions.

With the help of professional healthcare practitioners, and a commitment to a holistic approach to pain management, it is possible to improve an individual’s quality of life and promote lasting relief from chronic pain.

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
