4 Important Milestones During Your Baby’s First Year

Having a newborn in your life is extremely precious. Surely, it can be exhausting at times when you have to care for them every second of every day, but it gives you something to look forward to as well. The first year in your baby’s life can be quite eventful. Newborns grow up so fast and change almost every single day and it is important that parents know and expect these changes. Here are some of the key milestones your baby will go through during their first year.

1. Babbling and Smiling

All babies are cute, but the cuteness increases a million times when your newborn smiles at you or mumbles your name. Those are two things you can expect during the first year of your infant’s life. Newborns are extremely smart, and they can start reading lips from about 6-7 months. After a while, they start mumbling and babbling words that they hear frequently or their parents say to their faces all the time. Around that time, they also start smiling and even laughing when they see people they are familiar with or whenever someone tries to play with them. After a while of hearing your infant crying every day, it would be extremely nice for parents to finally see them smile and hear them laugh more often around the six months mark.

2. Teething

One of the most challenging phases of a newborn’s life is when they start to teeth. Many new parents may not be aware of what age their children start teething and how long it might take. This process should start happening when the baby is around four to six months old and can continue for about two to three years. During this time, your newborn is likely to be a lot more irritable and will try to put pretty much everything they can get their hands on in their mouth. They need even more care and attention until you start seeing their first couple of teeth. As soon as the first two teeth make an appearance, and they start showing them more vividly as they smile, things are likely to get easier.

3. Getting a Full Night’s Sleep

There is nothing like the exhaustion of having to stay up all night every night to care for your newborn. They need feeding and diaper changes around the clock, and that can be quite overwhelming for new parents who are not able to get a good night’s sleep for a few months. However, one thing parents should look forward to during the first year of their baby’s life is actually getting a full night’s sleep as their child gets to about three or four months old. Their sleeping patterns should start becoming more regulated, and that would allow the parents to get a good seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep.

It is important, however, that parents work hard on making sure their babies sleep at appropriate times and that they have a set routine so that they can get used to it as soon as possible. 4. Sitting Up and Crawling

Parents like to keep track of every little new thing their newborn is up to. And one of the best things to look forward to during the first year of your child’s life is how they slowly make their way towards walking. As soon as they can hold their head up and support their own weight, they will start by sitting in an upright position. Then as soon as they are about eight to nine months old, they should start crawling around the house and grabbing everything they can get their hands on. Right before the one year mark or perhaps a couple of months after that, you should see them start wobbling a little, then walking with a little help from adults or by leaning on walls or furniture. This varies from one baby to another but it is certainly something to look forward to and expect.

Babies are a blessing to any family. As soon as they are born they add a lot more love and liveliness to the home. New parents do not always have enough experience when it comes to dealing with their infants or knowing what to expect of them. That is why it is essential for them to do some research before the baby is born to prepare themselves for what is to come. It is important to realize that every baby is different, so you don’t have to worry if your baby does not hit every single milestone on time as they will get to it eventually.
