5 Easy At-Home Fixes That Will Save You Money

Our houses and apartments require constant maintenance. Not to mention the breakdowns that appear suddenly and not only we are not able to function normally in the house, but we also have to pay for the repair. Even the smallest savings on repairs will mean a lot for the house budget.

Next time something breaks in the house, you can try to fix the problem yourself in the simplest possible way.

What are the most common easy at-home fixes that will save you money?

Fix a Clogged Toilet

A clogged toilet – a problem you would like never to happen to you. Before you start looking for a plumber number, try one of the three ways to unclog the toilet.

  1. Hot water and detergent
  • Fill the cup with detergent and pour it into the toilet.
  • Pour hot water to fill the toilet to the top.
  • After half an hour add another bucket of hot water. Is the problem solved? Flush the toilet and check it.
  1. Use baking soda
  • Use a teaspoon of baking soda and dissolve it in a bucket of warm water
  • Take a little liquid soap and pour it into a clogged toilet first, wait for few minutes, and add water mixed with baking soda

Faucet leaks

Leaky faucet – is there anything more annoying?

Not only you’re wasting water, but you can’t help but hear that annoying sound over and over. Repairing a leaky faucet is an inexpensive and easy project.

A leaky faucet means that the rubber washer needs to be replaced.

  1. The first thing to do – shut off the water.
  2. Pry off the cap on the handle, remove the screw, tilt the handle back, and pull it off.
  3. If there’s a clip holding the cartridge use needle-nose pliers, remove it. Then pull the cartridge up.
  4. Remove the spout; use a utility knife to cut off the old O-rings. Coat the new O-rings with heat-proof, nontoxic, plumber’s grease.
  5. Match the length of the old cartridge to replace the entire cartridge.

How to Fix Broken PVC Pipe Leak

The easiest way to fix broken PVC pipes is to use epoxy. Repair epoxy is a viscous or putty liquid that people use to repair pipe leaks both on PVC and its joints.

  • The first thing to do – clean and dry the damaged area
  • Second – apply the epoxy
  • The laststep – wait between 20 minutes and one hour.

Dirty Old Caulking

Old caulking around toilets, sinks, and tubes is both ineffective and unattractive. The good news, it is not hard to replace.

  • The first step – follow the package instructions for applying caulk remover
  • Second – Wait for few minutes
  • Third – Scrape it away carefully with a knife.
  • Fourth step – Add new caulk and smooth it over with your finger for a finished look.

Squeaky Doors

Annoying thing squeaky doors, isn’t it? It is such an easy fix; you don’t have to listen to that noise over and over.

  • Sort of lubricant oil would be enough. You can apply butter, paraffin candles, olive oil, petroleum jelly, or WD-40 on the door hinge and the doors will stop squeaking right away.

Next time hold on for a minute before you call repairman. Save this text for later; maybe you won’t need it, but your neighbour or a friend might.
