Easy Editing Tips To Take Your Photos To The Next Level

Photo editing is one of those skills that can always come in handy. You don’t always know when you need to be able to do it. If you take a picture you’re proud of, you probably want it to look well-polished. The core of your photo is there but a few tweaks can make it stand out. Good editing can take any photo to a whole new level.

Here are our editing tips that anyone can do.

1. Pick a Good Photo

Let’s say you see something you like a lot and you want to take a picture of it. Whether it is to commemorate or to show your friends, you want to take a good picture. Take as many as you can of the same object and pick the best photo to edit. Starting with a blurry or too dark photo will make the editing process difficult especially if you’re a beginner. If you’re new to photography, you can find guides online on how to take a good picture.

 2. Adjust Brightness

Brightness or exposure almost always needs to be adjusted, especially if you’re shooting your photo indoors. According to this website, you should adjust your brightness so the photo has textures, to add to that story. You can look for guides online that have photography and editing tips. When adjusting the brightness, take care not to make metallic or shiny objects too bright. This is called a blow-out. If you find blow-outs, that means you’ve increased the brightness a tad too much.

3. Crop the Unnecessary parts

You want the best part of the picture to stand out. To do that, you have to crop unnecessary parts. Cropping is an easy process all in all. Another tip is to straighten the picture before cropping it. Make sure the horizon is horizontal when editing if you failed to do so when taking the picture. If your photo has some stains that got into the camera lens, you don’t have to crop these parts. Instead, you will find spot-removing tools in most editing programs.

4. Adjust Saturation

A photo high in brightness can look somewhat pale. To make the colors stand out, increase the saturation. They will bring out the vibrancy in the photo. Just up it a bit and you will notice the difference. Again, don’t go overboard with the saturation, make it so the green is still green but more vibrant green.

5. Adjust Contrast

Contrasting will highlight the darkness and the lightness in the photo. It’s best used for black and white colors. But you can add just a little contrast to colorful pictures too. Use high contrast to make the photo seem deep, textured, and intense. However, if you want the colors to seem soft and flat, lowering the contrast will make the colors muted. It all depends on what narrative are you try to use.

6. Adjust Color Balance

Sometimes lighting can make a photo appear too much of one color. It can be due to the lighting. For example, if the lighting is too blue, the picture can look very blue. That’s when you can make use of color balance. Use it to increase the intensity of other colors to create balance in the photo. The goal here is to make the colors seem realistic and neutral. The only case where you won’t need color balance is if the picture is black and white. Then, saturation and contrasts will be more useful.

7. Add Text

Adding text can be tricky, especially if the photo is busy. You can take the photo while bearing in mind that you have to leave space when adding text. Then, it won’t be so hard. But if the photo is already taken and it is full of details, there is still something you can do. That is to add a transparent overlay and write over it. Make the overlay with a color that mixes well with the rest of the photo, the same goes to the color of the font. If a bit lost, use a black-colored font as it will be apparent on the overlay and it can mix with anything.

Photo editing is like any skill, you need to take it bit by bit. Learn something new every day and apply it. Taking a lot of photos won’t hurt, but pick the ones to work on carefully. Colors are the most important aspect. If you can make the colors look good enough, you’ve already nailed the art of photo editing. The most important tip here is to experiment! Keep adjusting every part until you find something that pleases your eyes.
