According to the Greek New Testament, porneia means engaging yourself in illicit sexual activity. This can be either extramarital affairs or having unnatural sexual intercourse. In other words, porneia simply means all forms of sexual immorality, pornography and masturbation inclusive. The Bible, in many instances, warns against porneia (1 Corinthians 6:13, Mathew 5:28, I Corinthians 6:18, Ephesians 5:3, 1 Thessalonians 4:3, and Mathew 19:9)

Forms of Porneia or Fornications 

1. Sex outside of marriage

Any form of sexual activity between man and woman outside marriage confines is sexual immorality or fornication. In fact, a man shouldn’t touch a woman inappropriately unless he’s married to her (1 Corinthians 7:1). When two people engage in physical sexual intercourse, it’s far worse than adultery of the heart or lust. This is sinning against your own body (1 Corinthians 6:18). Revelation 21:8 says, “I warn you, she in the eyes of God and His holy Angels: Any sexual embracing, touching, and kissing of the person you’re not married to is sexual immorality. Those who engage in such practices and don’t repent won’t enter the kingdom of God, and they will be thrown in a lake of fire.”

2. Adultery

Scripture mentions two forms of adultery: physical adultery (Exodus 20:14) and adultery of the heart (Mathew 5:27-28). However, God hates much a man who sleeps with another’s wife, or a married woman who sleeps with another man. Actually, this is one of the greatest sins you can commit. Old Testament illustrates the seriousness of this sin; both a man who had sexual intercourse with another man’s wife and a married woman who committed adultery on her husband were put under death penalty (Leviticus 20:10).

Those who commit such sins today aren’t put on death sentence. In fact, they are celebrated. But then, they aren’t off the hook. If they don’t repent, hell’s their place (Revelation 21:8).

3. Sexual immorality within marriage

Most people, Christians included, think once a man and woman are married, they are free to do whatever they like or desire. This can’t and won’t be the truth. Just because you have exclusive sexual engagement with your spouse, the Bible doesn’t exclude from sexual immorality. Sodomy and sex during menstruation are two acts that the Bible strictly forbids the married couples. (Romans 1:26, Leviticus 18:19) 

Anyone who engages in these acts, even if they are married, is committing sexual immorality, and they will be cast into a lake of fire eternally (Revelation 21:8). 

4. Pornography

Anyone who’s family with God’s scriptures acknowledges pornography as a sin, but the problem is the hybrid hypocrisy of Christians. While they castigate “X” rated films, they are very comfortable with the “R” movies. Don’t be deceived watching any nudity, nakedness, or any sexual activity as it’s sexual immorality (Mathew 5:27-28).

Further, if a person entertains himself or herself by watching sexual scenes or pornography, he or she’s supporting this kind of behavior either by affirmation or financially.  

Abraham’s nephew Lot was regarded righteous because he got perplexed with filthy conduct and conversations of the wicked (2 Peter 2:6-8). Why don’t Christians get agitated with these films and characters?

5. Sensuality and immodesty

Nowadays, it’s more than impossible not to find sexually immoral photos or images. They’ve been made a norm. They are all over billboards, at the retail stores’ windows, and forms of adverts. They even creep into your own house via the Internet and television.

The Bible says a man or a woman who purposely dresses sensual commits sexual immorality. Jesus commanded women to dress modestly (1 Timothy 2:9). Further, the Bible, through Mark 9:42, says, “Whoever that causes these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to be hanged and thrown into a sea.”  This means that when you dress inappropriately, you’re not only engaging in sexual immorality, but also causing others to sin.

6. Homosexuality

This is one of the sensitive topics in Christianity. Christian liberals are on the rise, and many people are afraid of talking about it because of the backlash they receive in the joined quarters. This has many people, especially those who haven’t read the Bible extensively, think that you can practice homosexuality and be a Christian at the same time.

The Bible regards homosexuality as an ungodly act. “Do you know that the ungodly won’t enter the kingdom of God? Don’t be deceived. Neither idolaters, nor fornicators, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor covetous, nor revilers, nor extortioners, nor thieves will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).

Homosexuality isn’t only sexual immorality but also an abhorrent sin (Romans 1:26-32, Leviticus 20:13). This is a plague on humanity. It causes two calamities on humankind, disease and death, and leads to eternal fire (Romans 1:26-32).

The church should go back to when it was a church and condemn every sin equally. It doesn’t make sense to dedicate much of its efforts on other sins but exclude others. God doesn’t entertain any sin. Liberalism is a world view, and not a Godly view. Human beings have got this thought that once they accept something, God accepts it. This isn’t true.

7. Incest

Incest is clearly sexual immorality, and it’s well-outlined in the Law of Moses (Leviticus 18). You shouldn’t have sexual affiliation with siblings, step-siblings, in-law siblings, parents, step-parents, in-laws, aunts, uncles, grandparents, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, and children in law. Also, it’s unacceptable to have sex with a woman and any of her kids, or a woman and her sister.

Note that even if it’s a taboo culture in the western culture, God doesn’t forbid cousins from marrying each other.

8. Bestiality

Any individual with any form of sexual intercourse with any animal is sexually immoral (Leviticus 18:25). Such people won’t enter the kingdom of God if they don’t repent.

9. Female masculinity and male masculinity

Any woman that dresses in a masculine manner and any man that dresses in a feminine manner commit sexual immorality. Deuteronomy 22:5, the Bible says, “A woman shouldn’t wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment. Those who do so commits abomination in the eyes of God.”

How to Deal with Sexually Immoral People or Fornicators

Jesus himself, when on earth, encountered various types of sinners. Jesus even ate with sinners (Mark 2:16-17). Some of the sinners recognized they were willing to get saved (Mark 2:17). Jesus wasn’t that soft on the sinners. Those that refused to acknowledge their sins, he sternly warned them (Mathew 23:33). 

Today, Christians should call out sinners to repent, and they should teach them to observe all things that Christ commanded (Mathew 28:19-20). Some sinners will accept they are sinners and seek guidance, while others believe they are okay. Like Jesus, you should guide those who acknowledge their sins, and you should sternly condemn those who refuse to acknowledge their sins.

God’s Forgiveness and Sexual Immorality

If you’re engaging in sexual immorality, then you’re bound for eternal fires. If you repent, you’re forgiven, and the kingdom of heaven belongs to you. Ezekiel 18:21-13 says, “If a wicked man turns from all sorts of sins which he has engaged, keeps all my commandments, does what’s right and lawful, he shall surely live, but not die. None of the sins that he had committed will be remembered against him. Because of the righteousness he has done, he shall live.” 

This means God has no pleasure in destroying the wicked. That’s why you see the wicked people around. God has given them the opportunity to repent. Otherwise, if God were like human beings, then no other human would’ve survived because every person has fallen before God. God’s full of mercy, and he’s waiting for you to seek forgiveness. REPENT! REPENT! REPENT! (Ezekiel 33:11).

Final Thoughts

God hates sexual immorality, no matter how people try to make it a soft sin. Sex should be natural. What does it mean? Read Romans 1:26, “For this reason, God gave them up, even their women exchanged their natural use against nature.” There’s a natural use of a woman, and unnatural use that’s anal sex. Regarding the Bible, anal sex is referred to as SODOMY, and this is what made God destroy sodomites. 

Sex before marriage is rampant nowadays. The church should teach the youth abstinence measures. The world only tells them to use protection. This makes youth believe they are doing the right thing. This mentality should be crushed. Having sexual intercourse with a married person is also another thing the church should be against. Most church leaders are blatantly caught engaging in this sinful act, and they are allowed to lead. Homosexuality is also another sin. Condemn it.
