How To Build A Koi Pond In Your Backyard

A well-balanced pond incorporates methods to help reduce maintenance, support growth of fish and plants, and work with mother nature to transform your backyard into a water-garden paradise.

A Koi is a variant of the carp famously bred in Japan where different colors and patterns were developed through careful breeding. Fortunately, you can also have your own fish, by looking for reputable and authentic caretakers of koi for sale, to color the waters of your pond with their vibrant and rich schemes. There are a lot of breeds locally but the best of them are still those that came from Japan.

Here is how to make your own Koi Fish Pond:

1. Find the Right Spot

Determining the appropriate location is the first step in building your Koi pond ecosystem. You can use a garden hose and brightly colored spray paint to layout the desired shape on the ground. Keep in mind that an irregular shape will look more natural. Measure the maximum dimensions of your design in order to make sure that you have enough pond liner. Then mark it out using the spray paint and remove the hose to reveal a precise template of your excavation

2. Install the Filter Components

Your Koi fish will produce wastes along with uneaten foods so it’s important to install a filtration system to keep your pets healthy. Place your filter components that consist of a bio-fall and a surface skimmer along the perimeter of the pond. It is recommended that you position it at opposite ends of the pond to ensure proper water circulation.

You can also hook a hose from your pond to an external filtration system and use another line to return clean water back to the pond. Your filters must compose of a mechanical filter that traps dirt and debris and bio-filters that store bacteria to get rid of harmful compounds from your pond.

3. Excavate

You can now start digging up the pond. Start by digging up the first shelf of the pond by approximately 8 to 10 inches down. Be sure to compact the soil in the berm with a hand-tamper periodically to avoid future settling. You can then dig the second shelf by digging deeper than the first shelf. Make sure you don’t follow the contours of the first shelf to make it look natural. You can also add a third shelf if you want to. You just need to make sure that vertical walls are cut straight for ease of rock placement and structural integrity.

4. Underlayment and Liner

After the excavation, you can now prepare to put the underlayment and liner. The underlayment protects the liner from punctures. Cover the pond with the underlayment first, then the liner. Start from the bottom and pull the fabric to conform to the pond shelf and work your way up to the top. Make sure to remove large folds when you lay them down.

5. Rocks and Gravel

After you laid down the liner and the underlayment you can hold them in place by using big rocks and gravel. Start from the bottom-most part and place large rocks to the sides and smaller gravel into the gaps. This will serve as a retaining wall to keep the pond’s shape as water flows in.

6. Add the water and start the filter pump

When you’ve set the rocks and gravel you can put in some underwater plants so that you won’t have to get into the pond once it’s filled with water. After filling it with water, it is recommended that you cycle the water for a week before introducing your fish. This will allow you to check for leaks and make corrections, as well as make the water safe for your pets.

The last part is placing your pet fish into their new home. Koi fish are great as pets and having a beautiful garden in your backyard you’ll have your own personal view of their magnificence and calmness. You can always make improvements to suit your design, just make sure you don’t harm the fish when you’re working on it.
