How To Make Sure Your Hiring Process Finds The Best Employees

If you run your own business, you likely think of it as your child, your masterpiece, or at the very least, a display of your hard work. From dictating processes and procedures to handling design and other important decisions, you want to make sure your organization is always functioning and looking its best. One of the most important elements to ensuring your business’s success is selecting a stellar team to support your efforts. But it’s not always that simple.

From no-shows to minute skillsets, there are plenty of problems that could arise if you hire the wrong employee. While there’s no way to guarantee you’ll hire a great employee, there are a few ways you can bolster your hiring process to increase your chances of hiring the best employees on the job market. Here’s how.

Post listings on reputable websites

Your initial correspondence with the job market is likely to take place in two arenas: in person or online. If you expect prospective talent to take you seriously in person, wouldn’t you hope for the same online? From drafting up the job description to posting the listing to an online job board, you’ll want to make sure your business is reflected in the most professional light possible.

This means you’ll want to be clear, descriptive, and detailed with your listing and you’ll also want to only post to job listing sites that have a good reputation. While the classified ads might generate lots of leads, you’re more likely to find professionals on professionally-focused websites.

Strengthen your interview process

A quick search online for “interview tips” and you’re likely to find a list of the most commonly asked questions like:

  • “What are your biggest strengths?”
  • “What are your biggest weaknesses?”
  • And “Why should we hire you?”

But if you want to come up with an interview process that’s useful to your organization, you can’t simply copy and paste the questions you see online. In order to find the best candidate for the job, you’ll want to be a bit more specific in your questioning. Feel free to ask circumstantial questions like, “What would you do in this situation?” These are the inquiries that will provide the most helpful information.

In addition to customizing your questions, you should also consider having a panel interview (or multiple interviews) if needed. This way, colleagues and others can get a sense of the candidate and weigh in if they have any concerns that may impact your hiring decision.

Get serious about background checks

Even if you ask all of the right questions and trust your intuition, you can still wind up with lousy hires. To add an extra layer of protection for your small business, consider implementing pre-employment background checks to help you separate the less favorable candidates.

Background checks can reveal a variety of facts about applicants, including:

  • Identity verification
  • Criminal history
  • Employment history
  • Credit report
  • Fraud alerts

Employers should note that background checks are subject to strict employment law, so be sure to check with federal and state regulations to ensure that you’re operating in compliance with these standards.

Hire an HR professional

While no one understands your business and processes better than yourself, it might be beneficial to have an HR professional on your side to help with hiring. Aside from knowing all of the legal do’s and don’ts, HR professionals also tend to have plenty of experience sorting through applications and identifying the best qualified candidates, which can make the hiring process more streamlined and effective for you.

Consider referral incentives

Whether your employees know qualified professionals from previous jobs or frequently meet talent at networking events, odds are they can recognize great potential when they see it. So why not encourage them to scout out the best of the best with some referral incentives? Buy gift cards online, offer them a referral bonus, or maybe just give them some extra time off to inspire them to find candidates who are right for the job. The trick is, you’ll have to ensure their recommendation is reliable, so clarify that in order to receive their referral bonus, the employee will have to meet certain criteria.

Final notes

Finding great employees isn’t always easy, use these tips to help!
