Making Your Home Senior Friendly

Whether you have just moved to your home recently or you have lived there for decades, it may have a great deal of meaning for you. While assisted living facilities may be the right choice for some people, others may want to continue living independently in the same place. However, there may be hazards that could be dangerous as you get older. Fortunately, there are a number of alterations you can make, and you might be surprised to find that some of them are not as expensive or difficult as you may imagine.

Elevator Installation

Stairs can prevent a substantial obstacle to anyone who has even temporary issues with mobility. For example, they can present complications to recovering at home from surgery that you would not have to deal with if you lived in a one-story house. You may wonder whether you should move your bedroom to the ground floor, install additional rails or take other drastic steps to rearrange how the house is used. Most people do not think about putting an elevator in, but it is possible to install one in many different types of homes. With home elevators from Lifton, they can be installed very quickly, and having this feature will help you move safely and easily about the house.

Make Walking Easier

There are other potential walking hazards besides stairs. Any unevenness in the walkway to the house should be smoothed out, and if there are stairs up to a front porch, you may need to add rails or even a ramp. Stairs can be made more visible with alternating colors. You may need to install non-slip flooring in some parts of the house, and you should also make sure that there are not any loose rugs or pieces of carpeting that could cause an accident as well. Installing motion-sensor lighting outdoors and ensuring that the lighting inside the house is bright are ways to avoid missing a step and causing a fall.

Bathroom

Even if you can get away with not having non-slip flooring elsewhere in the house, the bathroom should be at the top of the list. This could include bathmats that won’t slip, as well as you may also want rails by the toilet and in the shower or bath. You could include a seat in the shower for added security. If the only storage space in the bathroom is cabinets under the sink, you could install shelving so that you don’t have to bend down to get items that you use frequently.

Kitchen

To avoid the price tag shock at once, you can gradually replace appliances with those that are easier to use, avoiding those with small writing and knobs or other objects that are hard to grasp or turn. Having open shelves or cabinet doors with glass makes the contents more accessible. Items you use often should be easily within reach. You can even lower the temperature on the hot water heater or put in valves that are pressure-balanced so that the water temperature is steady to avoid burns.
