Why It’s Important To Appreciate And Empathize With Your Co-Workers

Understanding the emotions of your co-workers is a critical skill to learn in the workplace. Through empathy and appreciation, you can resolve conflicts, improve relationships, and build a more productive team. While most of us are comfortable learning technical skills, we may feel ill-equipped to handle interpersonal skills because it can be intimidating to share our feelings.

What it means to show empathy and appreciation is different from person to person, but taking a few simple actions can genuinely make our workplace more connected. To encourage a safe space that values openness and honesty, it’s essential to establish an excellent emotional framework.

What is Empathy?

Empathy is the ability to recognize emotions and understand another person’s perspective of a problem or personal issue. At its core, empathy is a valuable tool that helps us support our co-workers even if we have never been in that situation or would choose a different outcome.

Empathy is similar to sympathy. Except to be sympathetic, we have to have experienced the same situation or outcome that the other person has gone through. It doesn’t involve stepping into another person’s shoes because you’ve already been in that situation before.

What is Appreciation?

Unlike empathy, appreciation doesn’t have to involve connecting with your co-workers on an emotional level but will create a positive feeling regardless. Recognizing and enjoying someone’s good qualities or accomplishments is an active act of appreciation.

For example, if you want to buy gifts for your colleagues to show how thankful you are for their hard work on a project, the receivers would understand the sentiment and feel happy as a result. You can brighten up someone’s day by simply saying “Thank You” after a job well done.

Why Empathy and Appreciation are Important in the Workplace

Understanding your co-workers’ thoughts and feelings is one of the most important skills a person can have. To build and maintain strong relationships, you need to acknowledge good work while also being supportive during difficult times.

Other reasons to practice appreciation and empathy in the workplace include:

Humans are Social Animals

Even introverts will agree that we need some form of human connection for good mental health. There are very few workplace activities that don’t rely on teamwork, and empathy can help us treat others with respect while also keeping others’ needs at the front of our minds. Empathy can also help us give appreciation to co-workers who aren’t having a great day or are unsure how they performed on a project.

Great for Business Relations

You likely notice straight away if your co-worker is feeling under the weather. Simply recognizing this is being empathetic of your co-workers’ needs because you immediately gathered this information by their tone of voice, body language, and behaviors. Building healthy cooperation with your colleagues can start with acknowledging when they’re feeling upset and then pulling them aside for a private conversation to let them know they’re appreciated.

Makes You Better at Handling Conflict

Conflict resolution isn’t our favorite thing to do in the workplace, but it’s a necessary evil most of us have to navigate. Noticing when a co-worker is angry can help you prepare for a situation that may erupt in an argument or a lose-lose solution. You no longer have to blindly grasp at a solution that will benefit one or neither of you because you understand the other party’s signals. You’ll also understand when to back off if the conflict continues.

Helps With Motivating Others

When you see the world from someone else’s perspective, you also see their feelings, motives, and preconceptions. Without empathy, it can be difficult to motivate someone when you have no idea what excites them. For example, some co-workers are inspired by their afternoon coffee, while others love to hear kind words from their team leaders. If you can find a common goal for your team, they’re more likely to stay motivated for the project’s duration.
