Having the Conversation, Part 2 — June 17, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Matt Watson starts the show talking to Analisa Astorga, a community activist who spoke with Santa Clarita Mayor, Cameron Smyth, following the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in front of the SCV City Hall building. Analisa responded to the Mayor’s call for someone he could speak to in order to get to know the demonstrators better. Analisa is a 23-year-old college student who comes from a family of Mexican and Chilean immigrants who have felt and experienced similar forms of discrimination and racist acts that black people do. Analisa heard there were demonstrations being planned in Santa Clarita and decided she had seen enough black people, minorities, and other people of color being killed in the hands of law enforcement. Listen to Analisa’s articulate and sophisticated conversation with Matt on what it means to her to be a part of the Black Lives Matter movement in the first and second segment of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR. Kristina calls in to continue the conversation on what grief really means, and how common misconceptions make it harder to combat it ourselves. Kristina breaks down how grief is approached by professionals, and Kristina also provides a list of symptoms that can people can refer to. Listen to Kristina’s full interview in the third segment of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Teri Fox, Investor for the Teri Hughes-Fox Family Foundation that supports local charities. Teri comes in to the show with her son Sebastian to talk about Batten’s disease and how it impacts a person. Sebastian has been suffering from Batten’s disease since he was 4-years-old, and the diagnosis is technically fatal as Batten’s disease has no cure. Sebastian continues to live his life despite the challenge, and Teri has dedicated her life to helping advance research and gene therapy that can help treat Batten’s disease and other rare diseases. About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
