Play-Based vs Project-Based Learning — May 20, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Dustin Langning, 8th grade Facilitator at SCVi. Dustin talks about the four major projects that he likes to use in his classes to help kids learn fundamental lessons in the 8th grade curriculum. He also talks about how each grade level and each teacher follows a similar system of having four major projects to leverage the power of project-based learning to help kids learning the more important lessons in their grade level. Dustin talks about how at the 8th grade level, the kids can be more focused on finding out who they are instead of finding out what is going to be on the test tomorrow. Traditional schoolwork that involves lecturing from static PowerPoint slides, worksheets, pop quizzes, and other basic methods don’t often inspire kids (or even college students) to try their hardest. Dustin explains how project-based learning is an amazing way to bring out the best in students of all ages so that they can not only learn an important lesson, but also create something that just might create a memory that lasts a lifetime. Listen to Dustin talk about the importance of project-based learning in all grade levels during the first two segments of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Aiden Bybee, Play-based Learning Expert. Aiden calls in to the show to talk about the importance of play-based learning and how it differs from project-based learning. Play-based learning focuses on getting outside and using fun activities to help kids learn about what is going on inside the classroom. Play-based learning helps gives kids another way to understand a lesson by getting them outside and into a different environment. Even from a young age, all of us are different learners and play-based learning is another tool educators can use to help kids learn about a lesson that is taking place inside the classroom. Aiden also talks about how in a regular school year, she spends almost all of her time encouraging kids to get off their electronics and outside to learn. With the outbreak of Covid-19, technology is now the only delivery method available to teach her students so Aiden has created some awesome ways to help her kids continue to learn through play-based learning. Listen to Aiden talk about the importance of play-based learning in the first segment of the second hour of the podcast.

Our last guest on the show is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about how trauma can manifest itself in every person in a different way. Kristina talks about how the impact of Covid-19 has manifested itself in many different ways for people all over the world. Kristina also talks about how people can become desensitized or over-stigmatized to traumas in their life, and that can lead to worsening of symptoms. Listen to Kristina break down how different people experience trauma in different ways during the third segment of the second hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
