Update from the Mayor — March 31, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Sara McDaniels is in for the week to fill her place. Matt and Sara talk about the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People developed by Stephen R. Covey to start the show. They talk about how everyone can continue to be their best, and even better themselves while all of our social norms have changed. Matt has utilized these habits in his life since he first read about them in his early 30’s, and it has continued to guide him to being his best to this very day.

The first guest on the show is Kathleen Fredette, Director of STEAM at iLEAD, who is in charge of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Music (STEAM) directive at iLEAD Schools. Kathleen calls in to the show to talk about how to do science at home that engages your children and teens. Kathleen has a laundry list of accomplishments in science and engineering, and has been one of the biggest contributors to the excellent science and engineering programs available at iLEAD schools. Kathleen has had direct communication and worked with some of the leading thinkers in science and engineering, and she has brought some of their best ideas to the learners at SCVi and iLEAD Schools. She has learned a lot in her own life and has a passion for sharing what she has learned with others. Kathleen shares about herself, and provides great projects and experiments that parents and kids can do together at home.

Our next guest on the show is Santa Clarita Mayor, Cameron Smyth. Mayor Smyth calls in to give us the latest on the status of Santa Clarita, and what the city is doing to continue to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Mayor Smyth talks about how there was a significant drop in public outings across Los Angeles County, and how that has made him proud of the progress being made in preventing the spread of Covid-19. Mayor Smyth was out hiking himself, and was happy to see how seriously the residents of Santa Clarita have taken the latest guidelines and mandates. Mayor Smyth talks about how the city council will be gathering tonight to talk about stores and businesses that aren’t able to make ends meet with next month’s rent and other bills about to cycle around. The city council will be talking about deferring rent payments, mortgage collection, and other taxes and bills that people are required to pay to keep a roof over their heads. Mayor Smyth also talks about how the SCV City Council will be presenting their meetings while maintaining social distancing, and still incorporating the voices and opinions of the people of Santa Clarita through a phone-in system. He comments that it may feel different, but the process will remain the same as previous meetings and proceedings have gone in the past.

Listen in as Matt Watson, Sara McDaniels, Mayor Cameron Smyth, and Kathleen Fredette talk about doing science at home, and an update from the mayor.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
