Dr. Nicholas Sakellariou, Director of Anesthesia Services — February 19, 2020

On this episode of the Providence Holy Cross Health Hour with Dr. Tom Burton, Dr. Nicholas Sakellariou, Director of Anesthesia Services, joins the show to talk about what he provides for the patients of the Providence Holy Cross system of medical facilities. Dr. Sakellariou found his passion for medicine in high school. He enjoyed science and biology and wanted to pursue the field of medicine since then. When Dr. Sakellariou was in a college class, a speaker came and spoke to the class about anesthesiology and he knew from there that’s what he wanted to pursue. As he went through his residency, he was always interacting with the people on the same path as him, and found comfort in the insights his peers gave him. Dr. Sakellariou enjoyed the one-on-one experience of being an anesthesiologist, and connected with the combination of technology and personable interaction with his patients.

Later in the show, Dr. Burton and Dr. Sakellariou talk about changing trends in how patients choose to be taken care of, and some of the side-affects of certain forms of anesthesia that are no longer used. Dr. Sakellariou talks about how over a decade ago, the common directive was to often use too much and focus on using narcotics. Dr. Sakellariou talks about how far his practice has come, and now focuses on non-narcotic forms of anesthesiology. Dr. Sakellariou also shares how anesthesiology has trended toward using medications that do not cause nausea, and overall lower the amount of narcotics used in the pain-killing process during and after surgical procedures.

Listen in as Dr. Tom Burton talks to Dr. Nicholas Sakellariou about anesthesiology and his path pursuing the practice.
